‘Pacific Rim’ Origin Series In Development

Legendary Entertainment is once again diving into the world of kaiju and Jaegers, as the studio is set to develop a prequel series for the Pacific Rim franchise.

This new project will be spearheaded by screenwriter Eric Heisserer, who known for his work on Shadow and Bone and the Oscar-nominated film Arrival.

The series marks the first project under a first-look television deal between Legendary and Heisserer’s production company, Chronology, co-founded with Carmen Lewis.

A New Chapter in the Pacific Rim Universe

Following on the heels of Dune: Prophecy, an upcoming prequel series to the Dune films, Legendary Entertainment is applying the same strategy to Pacific Rim.

The upcoming series will explore the origins of the Pacific Rim universe, providing fans with a deeper understanding of how the conflict between humanity and the monstrous kaiju began. This new addition promises to delve into the creation of the Jaegers—massive, mechanized warriors built by humanity to fend off the invasion of colossal, trans-dimensional creatures.

Jason Clodfelter, President of Legendary Television, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself. We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe.”

Expanding the Franchise’s Legacy

The Pacific Rim franchise, which began with Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 blockbuster, has already seen expansion into various media, including the Netflix animated series Pacific Rim: The Black.

The original film, which grossed over $400 million worldwide, introduced audiences to a world where humanity constructs giant robots to battle enormous, otherworldly monsters.

The franchise’s sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and the anime series have continued to build on this universe and starred John Boyega.

Variety first reported on the Pacific Rim origin series.
