Nightmare On Elm Street Getting Rebooted Again

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21629:]]

Five years ago saw the less than well received Nightmare On Elm Street remake from producer Michael Bay, which starred Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger.

Now it’s learned New Line Cinema is rebooting Nightmare on Elm Street yet again.

Tracking Board reports plot details are slim, but the reboot is said to start over with a fresh new take on Freddy Krueger, and that the studio wants to go back to the drawing board to create a remake worthy of the 1984 Wes Craven original.

It’s said that David Leslie Johnson, known for The Walking Dead, Conjuring 2 and Wrath of the Titans, is writing the script. Johnson was also recently announced to be writing the new Dungeons & Dragons movie for Warner Bros.

The original Nightmare On Elm Street starred Robert Englund, which spawned multiple sequels and even a short-lived TV series.

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F Has Record Breaking Opening Night

Dragon Ball Z: Resurretion F Trailer

FUNimation Entertainment announced a record breaking opening night for the theatrical release of “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’.” The anime film, which opened last night in 894 theaters across the U.S., brought in a stunning $1.97 Million box office for FUNimation Films on opening day of the limited theatrical event. The movie’s per screen average of more than $2,198 landed it in 1st place yesterday in Average Per Screen among the Top 10 movies showing in the U.S. and 6th place in overall box office gross against all major studio releases. “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’” is now the 8th highest anime opening of all time and the first limited event-style theatrical release to crack the Top 10.

“We are thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive fan response to the movie. We knew the opening would be very good but its performance has exceeded everyone’s expectations,” said Michael DuBoise, EVP and COO of FUNimation. “From our theatrical marketing campaign and fan engagement events to our expanded theatrical footprint and the specially produced 15-minute pre-show, FUNimation made a strategic decision to make Dragon Ball Z accessible to anime fans both old and new and it has paid off.”

Theater sell outs were reported in major metropolitan areas including New York, Los Angeles and Dallas. “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’” opens in Canada on Thursday, August 6, and will screen in more than 1,000 theaters total during its limited theatrical engagement from August 4 – 12, 2015.

“This film is a resounding victory on all levels,” said David Wengrod, VP of Theatrical Distribution for FUNimation. “The combination of our careful choice of release dates, an enticing marketing campaign that theaters embraced and fans universally accepted, and all of the great reviews added up to a terrific opening for us.”

“Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’” is the 19th film in the Dragon Ball franchise and is the follow-up to last year’s “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.” The film is a limited event-style theatrical release which includes a specially-produced 15-minute, Dragon Ball Z themed pre-show to create a unique experience for fans that can only be found in theaters.

Doctor Strange Said To Be Dark & Psychedelic

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21626:]]

Not much is known about the Doctor Strange movie other than Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the Sorcerer Supreme in addition to Tilda Swinton playing the Ancient One, with Scott Derrickson directing.

We do get a few tidbits from Ben Davis, the cinematographer on the film, from the BAFTA Masterclass in London.

Davis, who also was the cinematographer for Avengers 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy describes that Doctor Strange is set for a “dark” palette and “psychedelic grounding.”

“It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it’s not your typical Marvel action movie,” Davis stated, reports Screen Daily, before also mentioning that his initial reaction to the movie was that it could be “Marvel’s Fantasia.”

“Most of the work within it is about other dimensions,” Davis said. “And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.”

Davis also compared the imagery to the film to art by M. E. Escher, who is known for his impossible constructions, explorations of infinity, architecture, and tessellations.

“There’s a lot of previsualisation, and there’s a lot of work which is very hard – you look at it and you see the imagery that they’ve created for it and you think, ‘well how the hell do we shoot that!?’ because it’s all sort of Escher stuff. It’s all very out there. I can’t really say much more about it, I’m afraid. But I think it’ll be really interesting, and it’s a very dark movie, I’m pleased to say.

“Doctor Strange” has a November 4, 2016 release with Rachel McAdams in talks for the female lead, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is rumored to be playing Baron Mordo.

Dungeons & Dragons Movie On The Way From Hasbro & Warner Bros.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21624:]]

Warner Bros. Pictures, Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures and Sweetpea Entertainment are moving forward on a feature film franchise based on Dungeons & Dragons, the world’s most popular role playing game. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis, Courtney Solomon and Allan Zeman of Sweetpea Entertainment, and Roy Lee (“The LEGO Movie,” “How to Train Your Dragon”) are attached as producers.

Highlighting the priority being given to the project, Warner Bros. Pictures already has a script, written by David Leslie Johnson (“The Conjuring 2,” “Wrath of the Titans”).

“We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen,” said Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. “This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.”

“This is such an enormous opportunity to bring the rich fantasy setting of the Forgotten Realms to life and, together with the creative powerhouse of Warner Bros., use movies to tell the stories that have enchanted passionate D&D fans for decades,” said Stephen Davis, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer of Hasbro, Inc. “D&D is the role-playing game that started it all and now we have the opportunity to ignite a franchise for its legions of avid fans in a way never done before.”

Dungeons & Dragons first became popular in 1974, and since then has amassed millions of players and fans worldwide. The hugely popular property has also influenced numerous writers, directors, game designers, and other creative professionals throughout its four decades.

“We are thrilled that this beloved property can finally make its way to the big screen after 20 years, and that it can be realized by Warner Bros., which has been responsible for the biggest fantasy franchises over the past two decades,” said Courtney Solomon of Sweetpea Entertainment.

The announcement reflects the resolution of Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast LLC’s complaint against Sweetpea Entertainment, Inc. and Sweetpea BVI, Ltd. and the counterclaims filed by Sweetpea against Hasbro in May 2013 related to the Dungeons & Dragon brand. Solomon and Zeman will be attached to produce all Warner Bros.-produced Dungeons & Dragons film and television productions. All rights for future Dungeons & Dragons productions have been unified and returned to Wizards of the Coast, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hasbro.

Gunman Killed During Mad Max Showing In Tennessee

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21621:]]

Almost two weeks after John Russell Houser shot up a movie theater in Lafayette, La., a similar incident has occurred in Antioch, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville.

The shooting took place around 2:15 ET at the start of Mad Max: Fury Road at the Carmike Hickory 8 theaters at 901 Bell Road.

Police were able to respond almost immediately, which led to the death of the alleged gunman, said to be a 51-year-old white male, who was armed with gun and a hatchet.

The gunman is said to have used pepper spray throughout the theaters and was wearing a surgical mask, possibly to stop the effects of the pepper spray.

The two immediate responding officers entered through the projection room and engaged the suspect in gunfire. The suspect then attempted to leave through the back door where the SWAT team engaged and fatally wounded him.

The suspect was the only one wounded by gunfire. It’s reported two women were injured from exposure to the pepper spray, and that one man suffered superficial injuries to his shoulder, thought to be from the hatchet.

Two backpacks were also found at the scene, one on the suspect and one left in the theater, with the police stating they weren’t comfortabe with the backpacks, which would be detonated.

It’s reported no victims were transported to the hospital and no one was seen covered in blood.

Boston Herald Tries To Make Donald Trump Look Bad In Front Of Stan Lee — Doesn’t Work (Video)

Check out an interview above featuring Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Fantastic Four and lots more, weighing in on super heroes as well as who would win between Batman Vs. Superman.

Stan Lee is also asked about his personal heroes, in which the interviewer of the Boston Herald tells Stan Lee not to say Donald Trump. Lee questions the lady about what she just said, in which she repeats herself, “Don’t say Donald Trump.” Stan Lee seems a little taken back by the comment, states Trump is not his hero, but follows up with mention that his personal heroes are people that do things well in their every day lives. Stan Lee was quick to reply, “Donald Trump does things well. He runs his company well.”

Regarding Batman Vs. Superman, Stan Lee’s choice to win is the Man of Steel.

“Superman, I think. He’s indestructible and can do anything, and Batman relies on a few weapons,” Lee said. “The fellow who created Batman, Bob Kane, is a friend of mine, so he’d be unhappy of me saying that. But at the same time, Jerry Siegel, one of the creators of Superman, used to work for me for awhile, so I feel I have divided loyalties. But if this is real – a fight between Superman and Batman – there’s no one who should bet on Batman.”

Terminator: Genisys Review

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21611:]]

No More Years

A Film Review of Terminator Genisys

Yes, yes I realize this film has been panned enough by everyone that it has played itself out of virtually every cinema, but I was able to catch a screening at the cheap theater recently, and I was thinking it might have some redeeming value seeing how it still has some connection to the Terminator legacy.  As it turns out, the popular vote regarding this example of Hollywood haberdashery was more or less, right on the money.  As always, I encourage my readers to make up their own minds with as much information as they have available to them and certainly not to simply take my word for it, but not only would I recommend not giving this film one single viewing, I’d recommend not even acknowledging its existence.  Well, that just about wraps up this review in terms of cutting to the chase, but for those of you who’d like to accompany me on a short, cathartic journey of ridicule over this formerly beloved franchise let us venture forth.

It is a pure and simple fact that this franchise has completely lost its way ever since James Cameron relinquished control after Terminator 2: Judgment Day.  To this day, it remains as one of the best sci-fi thrillers that not only bench presses tons of action, effects and stunts, but has some of the best social commentary regarding unbridled scientific research into artificial intelligence and an over-dependency on automation.  Sequels since have tinkered with gimmicks to keep an aging “Ahnold” in the fold, brainstormed with different killer robots and considered focusing on different characters of this inescapable temporal loop.  None of the post T2 sequels had the desperate tone and raw impact of its predecessors.  The same is easily said about Terminator Genisys, a film completely dependent on CG for spectacle, nostalgia for interest and Schwarzenegger for anyone else wondering how a 68 year old man can still sell “killer robot from the future” in a spoof-free presentation.  There is so much gobbledygook going on from a story perspective of this train wreck on celluloid that really getting into it negates this new bullet point analysis I am experimenting with.  So let’s dispense with the pleasantries and get right to the specifics.

Action Style

If the strategy for the approach to the entire action scheme could be summed up into one theme, it would be a battering ram.  Burly men throwing each other all over the place is great for the testosterone, but gets old pretty quickly – no matter how much gunfire and explosions are filling in the empty spaces.

3/6

Action Frame

Since there’s no pressing need to explain what the hell is going on to the audience, this film keeps the pacing up as locations constantly shift along with the prescribed angles to keep the hectic motion accelerating.

4/5

Lead Performance

Arnold needs to stop making these films.  His Austrian strongman antics and charm left him when he ceased being a strongman.  If this is the best Emilia Clarke can bring over from her experience with Game of Thrones, then, yikes!

1/6

Supporting Performance

Jai Courtney is a better robot than a human being playing a robot for a Hollywood film production.  Jason Clarke is an actor with 2 sides: one that is deep and emotional (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and one that feasts on 2 dimensions (White House Down).  This film received the latter, but J.K. Simmons is a surprise cameo even if he’s used as a complete throwaway.

2/5

Music

Average and respectable.

3/6

Sound F/X

See above.

3/5

 “Moving” = 16/33

Digital F/X

There’s a ton of CG going on throughout.  If it isn’t some kind of time travel effect, it’s some sort of robot battle or crazy chase sequence.  Not quite as plastic as the Star Wars Prequels, but that fake Arnold from the original Terminator sure was.

5/6

Special F/X

A Terminator film has a prerequisite amount of gunfire, explosions and car crashes, but digital effects lifted a heavier burden regarding all these categories.

3/5

Costumes

Everyone is in street clothes all the time, but I guess I can be thankful they didn’t decide to over-sex Sarah Connor with combat jeggings.

3/6

Hair & Makeup

No, no, no.  Arnold looks too old and his hair looks too white and sparse.  I don’t care if the script calls for an acknowledgement of the organic elements of his Cyborg design as being worn over time.  They could have looked a hell of a lot better than that!

2/5

Exteriors

Lots of places to get transported to yields a bevy of contrasting locales.

5/6

Interiors

Adequate, but also a bit simplified.  I feel like if I were planning a sewer ambush for that many years, I’d have a Mad Max film on steroids waiting for them – not what the audience witnessed here.

4/5

“Picture” = 22/33

Hook

So we have to go back in time to go forward in time because this time around things are different thanks to a McGuffin overshadowed by a new evolution in John Connor.  Is that right?

1/4

Conflict

Humans vs. Terminators, Yay!  But this Storm Shadow Terminator is using the same liquid metal gags from 1991?  I don’t know whose tactics are more predictable, humans’ or Skynet’s?

1/4

Resolution

A cool upgrade finally happens, but of course it’s too late to have any impact on the action and none of it really matters because the whole journey seemed to go from nowhere to nowhere.

1/4

Dialogue

Arnold’s robot is far too high on the talky-talky, which sets a self perpetuating trivial tone with how just about every character addresses each other.  I thought this was the end of the world people?!?

2/6

Exposition

Why the hell were we going back in time to go forward in time again?  Why couldn’t we have found a better way and destination with our own time travel device?  Where did Pops come from?  These are not the droids you’re looking for.

2/5

Character Uniqueness

Same Terminator Protector, same Sarah Connor, same Kyle Reese – simply played by less effective and talented actors.  Yes, 1991 Arnold was more talented than 2015 Arnold.

2/6

Character Relatability

For a ragtag group pulling out all the stops to save humanity, they sure struggle to ground their cause in any humanity.  No, I didn’t buy that shoehorned “romance” between Kyle and Sarah nor did I buy into the Terminator’s “paternal” relationship with Sarah.  Linda Hamilton did more with one scene staring into space with voiceover than everyone else did in this whole movie.

1/5

“Story” = 10/34

Overall MPS Rating:  48/100

Ugh!  Terminator Genisys?  More like Terminator Exodus, as in, never return to this franchise again unless James Cameron or someone who actually wants to say something meaningful is in charge of the production.  Of course, what will probably happen next is a stop motion, claymation Terminator voiced by Arnold because no amount of Futurama will be able to CG him walking across the screen, let alone blowing up the bad guys and saving the day.  Do yourselves a favor and just get T2 on Blu Ray and just watch that.

Good News: No Midi-Chlorians For Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Video)

J.J. Abrams particpated in a quick Q&A about Star Wars: The Force Awakens while attending the Red Carpet premiere of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, of which he is a producer, and offered a few tidbits.

Abrams told MTV that a rough cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens exists, but wouldn’t give a specific length, only stating a rough cut could be anywhere from one and a half hours to four hours.

Worth a note is that Abrams let it be known Midi-chlorians are not mentioned at all in the movie. George Luas used Midi-chlorians in the prequels to explain why The Force exists in that they are microscopic life forms that live symbiotically inside the cells of all living things. It’s safe to say, the explanation didn’t go over well with most Star Wars fans.

Check out more above, which includes some fun questions ranging from Chewbacca getting shaved to whether Abrams regrets being there.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has a December 18, 2015 release directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.
