Minecraft 2 Release Date Revealed: Lands Just Weeks After James Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’

Warner Bros. has announced a release date for the sequel to A Minecraft Movie — and it’s landing dangerously close to James Gunn’s Superman sequel.

The untitled Minecraft 2 arrives in theaters on July 23, 2027, just two weeks after Gunn’s Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow, which opens July 9, 2027.

It’s also the same day that Disney recently announced for The Simpsons movie.

Minecraft Sequel in the Works

Following the surprise success of this year’s A Minecraft Movie, Warner Bros. and Legendary are moving ahead with a sequel. Jared Hess returns to direct and co-write the script alongside Chris Galletta. The first movie grossed an impressive $957.8 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing movie of the year and Warner’s biggest non-superhero hit in years.

The original film starred Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge. It opened in early April with a massive $163 million domestic debut and $313 million global start — the best launch ever for a video game movie, topping The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Momoa is set to return as a producer. No word on casting as of yet.

Warner Bros. Bets on Minecraft Over Superman?

The timing of Minecraft 2’s release is notable. It follows reports that James Gunn’s Superman — which opened this past July — struggled financially despite heavy promotion and a $350 million budget. With the movie’s $615.7 million box office, many analysts (and our own insiders) have suggested it fell short of breaking even, raising questions about the future of Gunn’s DCU and its appeal with general audiences.

While Gunn is writing and directing the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, the studio appears to be hedging its bets by doubling down on proven IP like Minecraft. The move signals where Warner Bros. may be finding its real box office strength — outside the superhero genre.

It’s also possible Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow release date could get pushed.

What’s Next

Man of Tomorrow will continue James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, starring David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Meanwhile, Minecraft 2 will aim to repeat its billion-dollar success with returning director Jared Hess and likely the original cast, including Jason Momoa.

With both blockbusters slated for July 2027, Warner Bros. faces an interesting showdown, between James Gunn’s struggling DCU and one of the studio’s biggest gaming hits ever.
