A big rumor following the D23 release of the Captain America: Brave New World trailer claims Marvel has removed director Julius Onah as the director.
It’s known Captain America: Brave New World has undergone massive reshoots. There are claims that basically the entire movie has been reshot.
Removing a director wouldn’t be unheard of as Disney/Lucasfilm removed Gareth Edwards from Star Wars: Rogue One and had Tony Gilroy finish the movie.
Insiders at Comic-Con have also told me Taika Waititi was removed from Thor: Love and Thunder. I was told Waititi didn’t finish the reshoots and the final cut of the movie. I was also told that Marvel did it themselves and had a tough time putting together the final cut as they kept running into issues continuity and story wise. What you got in theaters is the best version they could come up with. My insiders have said as a result that Taika Waititi is out at Lucasfilm and not doing his Star Wars movie.
What does the rumor say?
Regarding, Captain America: Brave New World, so with Disney removing directors from at least two projects, I’m not surprised if the following is true.
According to X user, ThwipT (via That Park Place), Julius Onah is off Captain America: Brave New World:
Cap 4 director Julius Onah has pretty much been removed from the project. He’s been cordial about it tho so his name will still be listed
Similar to Rogue One when Tony Gilroy was brought in to finish the film, Gareth Edwards didn’t start drama so they let him keep full credit

A user commented “that Tim Blake Nelson literally complimented him for his involvement recently. Stop lying.”
ThwipT shot back, “And the Rogue One actors all talked nicely about Gareth Edwards for the entire press run. I’m not sure how what you’re saying disproves anything.”
The user then replied, “You don’t say the reason he’s gone, who’s the replacement, but expect me to believe a random ‘scooper’ over the guy who actually worked on the film. But sure pal, you know more than all of us apparently.”
ThwipT countered with:
1st, obviously it’s cause the movie has been a disaster behind the scenes. This isn’t news
2nd, I’m honest about that which should tell you I’m honest about all of it
3rd, you don’t have to believe me that’s fine. I’m just saying your reason for choosing not to makes no sense
Regarding if Captain America: Brave New World actually has a new “director,” I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a similar situation from what I have been told about Thor: Love and Thunder — that Marvel is finishing it themselves. It could be that Marvel is putting together the final cut from whatever footage Julius Onah shot. A producer might have also finished the reshoots with a director of photography.
Worth a mention is that Julius Onah wasn’t at D23, but Marvel brought in Matt Shakman for Fantastic Four, and Jake Schreier was there for Thunderbolts.
