Marvel Creating “Truly Epic” Line Of Video Games; Spider-Man Just The First

Last night at the E3 saw Marvel announce the new Spider-Man exclusive PS4 video game and trailer reveal, which is original and not related to the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming Marvel movie.

Now it’s learned that Marvel is set on creating “truly epic” video games, and that the Spider-Man video game is just the first (a Marvel Telltale Games video game is on the way as well).

“We are absolutely obsessed about [quality],” Jay Ong, Marvel’s vice president of games told Polygon. “That is our North Star. We always say ‘Great is not good enough. We’re going for truly epic.’ Is [Spider-Man] a signal of things to come? Oh, yes. Absolutely. And we can’t wait to tell the world about it.”

Ong made mention that Marvel only partners with only about 10% of ideas pitched to them and said they aren’t releasing video games to coincide with movies.

“One of the things we really focus on in terms of our new strategy is that we all believe that great games drive the brand and great games are what our fans really deserve,” Ong said. “The question is, ‘How we can get there?’ The thing we landed on is to be really selective with who we partner with. Extremely selective. Right now I would say that out of every 10 opportunities we look at, we maybe do one.”

Further Spider-Man details and a release date have yet to be announced; likewise, not much is known about the Marvel Telltale game, but Ong did tease it “will delight fans.”

“One of our mantras is authenticity; it’s easy to make a game with Spider-Man on the label, but it’s much harder to make it truly authentic in a way that reflects Peter Parker, the character,” Ong added.
