The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 1 Is Just Okay

Tonight saw Disney and LucasFilm premiere the first episode of The Mandalorian Season 2 with “The Marshal,” which I thought was just okay.

Warning: Spoilers follow.

The episode sees Mando go to a source where he asks where he can find another Mandalorian, but the cyclops-dude doubles crosses him because he wants the Mando armor. A fight ensues where Mando quickly dispatches everyone and he learns a Mandalorian has been spotted on Tatooine.

So it’s back to Tatooine again where the plot is basically the same as the first season’s episode #2 “The Child” where Mando is forced to kill a creature; however, this time around it’s on a much grander scale, but again, it’s essentially the same story as even an egg is included.

So Mando goes to an old mining town on Tatooine where there is a new settlement. Upon walking into the local gin mill and inquiring about if there is another Mandalorian around, up walks “The Marshal” who happens to be wearing none other than Boba Fett’s armor.

As “Boba Fett” asks Mando to sit down and have a drink with him, “Boba” takes off his helmet, where Mando instantly knows he isn’t the real deal and wants the armor back.

The two nearly have an old-fashioned Western shoot out but are interrupted by a giant sand dragon creature that has been tormenting the town, so they strike a deal, if Mando helps kill the dragon he can have the armor back.

The Marshal happens to be played by Timothy Olyphant who played the same character in the HBO Deadwood series, which I thought was really cool, but Olyphant looked ridiculous wearing the armor. The armor was much too big and bulky for Olyphant’s frame and looked goofy.

Long story short, so the people of the settlement then have to team up with Tusken Raiders to help take down the sand dragon creature. Mando knows their language and is able to easily communicate with them (while Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi is unable to for some reason in Star Wars).

We get some decent action and they manage to slay the beast, where it’s revealed the main reason the Tusken Raiders wanted the carcass is because it holds an egg. Again, very similar to the first season episode where Mando strikes a deal with the Jawas to kill the Mud Horn which has an egg.

The end of the episode sees The Marshal give Mando the armor of Boba Fett and off he goes with Baby Yoda who only looked cute in this episode, but from a distance, someone looks on, and it happens to be actor Temuera Morrison who played Jango Fett, and voiced Boba Fett as well as Captain Rex, but the kicker is we don’t know which it is.

According to iMDB, Temuera Morrison is playing Boba Fett but that is not official and hasn’t been confirmed by Disney.

The episode obviously hinted it could be Boba Fett, and similar to the EU storyline where Boba Fett survives the Sarlacc Pit because of his armor, Mando survived being swallowed by the dragon because of his own armor, so there is a big nod there. They also mention the dragon ate and killed and took over a Sarlacc Pit for its home.

At the end of the episode, it did make it seem as if Boba Fett was after his armor.

However, Temuera Morrison could actually be Captain Rex from the Clone Wars animated series, and Rex could be actually hunting down Baby Yoda, perhaps for Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, who interestingly enough was just teased by Disney Plus before the episode.

Another possibility could always be that Temuera Morrison plays both Captain Rex and Boba Fett in The Mandalorian Season 2, as they are all clones of Jango.

Presently, fans on social media are raving about the episode (I hope Disney is paying these guys), but I thought it was “just okay” and expected a much better story, again, as it was just way too similar to the Season 1 egg episode.

Nothing new under the two suns.
