Jurassic World: Rebirth Stomps Estimates, Still Can’t Outrun Franchise Decline

Jurassic World: Rebirth Stomps Estimates, Still Can’t Outrun Franchise Decline

Jurassic World: Rebirth box office results beat projections, with strong domestic and international earnings despite being the franchise’s lowest opener.

What are the Jurassic World: Rebirth box office numbers?

It’s 3-day domestic came in at $82.1 million, better than the $80M estimates.

Likewise, the 5-day Holiday weekend numbers blew by the estimates, bringing in $147.3M, while the original estimates pegged a five day of $120M-$130M.

Foreign markets brought in another $171M, for a current worldwide gross of over $318.3M.

7/14 update: After its second weekend, the worldwide gross is at $532,699,420 ($232,448,420 domestic / $300,251,000 foreign). The domestic 12-day opening for Dominion saw $266,065,875, and the first Jurassic World was at $427,496,750.

No dinosaur fatigue but still franchise low

The strong turnout proves there is no dinosaur fatigue. That said, Jurassic World: Rebirth still comes in at franchise low. Will it hit a billion? Will it have any legs? Superman screenings start on Monday or Tuesday. Then we got Marvel’s Fantastic Four two weeks later.

I also think that, similar to the last movie, Universal didn’t bother putting out a good movie, as they didn’t need to, knowing they had an audience that would apparently eat anything they threw at them. As I said in my review, they don’t have any respect for the fans and think of them as being really dumb. It’s a cash grab. That’s Jurassic World: Rebirth.

Lot lower than previous JW films

While fans have been celebrating, Jurassic World: Rebirth still needs to hit $562.5M just to break even, as its budget is reported to be $225 million before marketing via THR.

Update: Apparently, various outlets are now reporting JWR has a $180M budget. As of late, whenever a movie opens soft, they start reporting a lower budget, which means the break-even numbers are lower.

Comparing the Jurassic World: Rebirth box office to the previous JW movies also shows a huge drop:

  • Jurassic World (2015) opened to over $208 million in 3 DAYS, which in today’s dollars is over $283 million.
  • Jurassic World opened to over $258 million in 5 DAYS, which in today’s dollars is over $350 million.
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) opened to $148 million over 3 DAYS, which in today’s dollars is over $189M.
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opened to over $181 million over 5 DAYS, which in today’s dollars is over $245M.
  • Jurassic World: Dominion (2022) opened to over $145M in 3 DAYS.
  • Jurassic World: Dominion opened to over $172M in 5 DAYS.

These films also didn’t have the benefit of a 5-day long holiday weekend, as their numbers include their first Monday and Tuesday.

Again, Rebirth is going to need a decent pair of legs to break even and potentially even make a profit. It’s weekend #2 versus Superman will be a big test. Superman also has the benefit of IMAX screenings, which Rebirth oddly never got, as F1 retained them in its second week.
