Both Josh Brolin and Matthew McConaughey will not be playing James Gunn’s Green Lantern in the upcoming DCU Lanterns TV series.
Josh Brolin was said to be in talks for the role but is now said to have passed on playing the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern.
Matthew McConaughey might not have ever been up for the role as it just might have been a rumor thrown out there.
The info comes from THR following last week’s rumors which also includes that Ewan McGregor might be up to play Green Lantern in Gunn’s DC universe.
THR reported on Tuesday Josh Brolin was eyed to play Hal Jordan but that according to multiple sources, the actor received an offer at the end of August, and by the end of this past weekend, came to the decision he didn’t want to play the role.
Brolin has already play two superhero roles with Thanos in the MCU and Cable in the Deadpool Fox movies. Rumors offer he could return as King Thanos in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Since Lanterns is being compared to HBO’s True Detective, that is may be how Matthew McConaughey came about.
THR adds that “the internet was all abuzz at the prospect of Brolin playing Jordan, although he was never a sure thing. Speculation also arose around several other A-listers, but it’s unclear how valid those rumors are. Matthew McConaughey, for example, will not be donning the ring, according to sources.”
That sounds like it could also mean Ewan McGregor isn’t taking the role.
The site also adds that the show is looking for a young, more fresh-faced actor for the role of Green Lantern John Stewart opposite an older and bigger name for Hal Jordan Green Lantern.
Lanterns is expected to start filming early next year. The series has been described as a “terrestrial-based TV show” similar to True Detective, where two Green Lanterns act as space cops watching over Earth.
