Star Wars Is ‘Too White’ Says John Boyega, Who Blames Fans

Once again, it’s the fans’ fault, according to John Boyega, who blames the fans for the failure of Disney Star Wars and his character Finn, who went from Stormtrooper to hopeful Jedi but fizzled out into nothing.

While appearing in the new Apple TV+ documentary, Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood, John Boyega blasted Star Wars fans.

What did John Boyega say?

“Lemme tell ya, ‘Star Wars’ always had the vibe of being in the most whitest, elite space. It’s a franchise that’s so white that a Black person existing in [it] was something,” Boyega said in the documentary.

Boyega continued with mention that fans bring up Lando and Mace Windu as an example of already existing diverse characters, but Boyega doesn’t think those arguments hold up.

“You can always tell it’s something when some ‘Star Wars’ fans try to say, ‘Well, we had Lando Calrissian and had Samuel L. Jackson!’ It’s like telling me how many cookie chips are in the cookie dough. It’s like, they just scattered that in there, bro!” he said.

Boyega believes Star Wars fans are not accepting of Black actors in leading roles.

“They’re okay with us playing the best friend, but once we touch their heroes, once we lead, once we trailblaze, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s just a bit too much! They’re pandering,’” he said.

Is John Boyega right about the fans?

Boyega’s comments have been gaining traction on social media. Worth pointing out is that a lot of the responses from fans argue that the color of his skin had nothing to do with the fan reactions to his character and the Disney Star Wars movies.

The fans don’t even blame Boyega, they blame the likes of Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson, who butchered his story arc and character in The Last Jedi.
