Idris Elba Says James Bond Shouldn’t Be Woke: ‘Just Be Bond’

Idris Elba is once again weighing in on James Bond, but this time the longtime fan-favorite pick for 007 is making it clear he doesn’t think the franchise should be changed just to chase modern trends.

Speaking with British GQ, Elba said he was flattered by years of Bond speculation, but he never viewed himself as a realistic choice for the role.

“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” Elba said. “James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

Elba also said Bond should remain true to what the franchise has always been: escapism.

“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” Elba said. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”

The comments come as Amazon MGM continues to move forward with the next era of 007 following Daniel Craig’s exit. The studio has yet to announce the next James Bond, though Amazon recently responded to casting rumors involving names like Jacob Elordi and Callum Turner.

Elba Pushes Back On Changing Bond For Modern Audiences

Elba has been linked to Bond rumors for years, with fans repeatedly naming him as a possible replacement for Craig. The actor has pushed back on the chatter before, and his latest comments make it clear he sees Bond as a character with a specific identity, not something that needs to be rebuilt around every modern debate.

His point is simple: Bond works because the franchise is fantasy. It is not supposed to answer every cultural argument or appeal to every possible market. It is supposed to be James Bond.

For Amazon, the comments also land at an interesting time. The next Bond movie is expected to relaunch the franchise for a new generation, but Elba’s remarks speak directly to the question fans keep asking: will Amazon keep Bond as Bond, or try to reinvent him for the current Hollywood climate?

Amazon Still Hasn’t Named The Next 007

No official casting announcement has been made for the next James Bond. Rumors continue to swirl around younger actors, with the studio expected to go in a new direction after Craig’s run ended with No Time To Die.

Elba, meanwhile, sounds finished with the idea. He appreciated the fan support, but he also seems to understand the bigger issue surrounding the franchise: Bond has to remain Bond.

As Elba put it, “Just be Bond.”
