Ian McKellen Confirms He Will Play Gandalf Again in ‘The Hunt for Gollum’

It’s official: Sir Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

McKellen confirmed the news during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, adding that filming will begin this July in New Zealand.

Gandalf Is Back

While promoting his latest projects, McKellen was asked directly by Colbert about returning to Middle-earth in Andy Serkis’ upcoming film.

“I was so happy to hear that you’re going to be reprising the role of Gandalf in The Hunt for Gollum,” said Colbert.

McKellen responded and confirmed the production timeline.

“I think in July, which is unfortunate because it’s winter down there in New Zealand,” he said. “But we’ll be indoors probably most of the time. Yes. And I put on the pointy hat and the beard. And the nose. And the eyebrows. And the mustache. And the gloves, I dare say.”

This marks McKellen’s first appearance as Gandalf since 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Production Set for July 2026

The Hunt for Gollum begins filming in July, with Andy Serkis directing and starring once again as Gollum.

The movie is set for theatrical release on December 17, 2027, making it the first live-action Lord of the Rings film in over a decade.

Philippa Boyens previously confirmed the story takes place between Bilbo’s birthday party and the Mines of Moria, focused from Gollum’s perspective. Peter Jackson, Boyens, and Fran Walsh are producing the film and are involved throughout development.

Frodo Also Confirmed

During a fan event last summer, McKellen teased that Frodo would also appear in the film.

While Elijah Wood’s return hasn’t been confirmed, the mention adds fuel to speculation that more original cast members may return if the story fits.

IMDb lists both actors as returning.
