Henry Cavill opens up for the first time in a new interview about the upcoming spy thriller, Argylle, by director Matthew Vaughn.
The flick sees Henry playing the titular character, the secret agent Argylle who is on a mission to unravel a global spy syndicate.
Cavill spoke about working the fight scenes with Sam Rockwell who plays Aiden, a cat-allergic spy, and about the eccentric(?!) looks of the characters.
First big scene takes place onboard a train
“Sam and I were watching each other and just trying to make sure that we had a similarity of movements,” Cavill told EW about the first big fight scene that takes aboard a train. “Certain movements worked better for him, so I would mimic those, and then different movements in other places worked better for me, so he would copy those. Fight scenes are tricky and complex, especially in a cramped space like that with lots of hard edges.”
Cavill added, “It’s quite nice doing these things when you have someone doing the exact same work as you. So I do my bit, or Sam does his thing, and the other one gets to rest. The camera moves on, and we get to have a nice break. It was definitely a new way of doing things, but I enjoyed it. It was a good challenge.”
Regarding the look of the characters, Henry Cavill sports a green velvet suit and then of course there is that flat-top haircut.
“That was actually Matthew’s pitch, his signature style,” Cavill said. “I wanted to have fun with it. Matthew said, ‘Look, this guy’s going to have a particular look and you’ve got to trust me.’ And I did! That’s the kind of thing I was looking for. I’m glad I did it.”
What is Argylle about?
The official synopsis offers that the film is from the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman franchise, Kick-Ass). Argylle is a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller.
“The greater the spy, the bigger the lie,” teases the description.
Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise) plays Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aiden, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.
Also starring includes Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Grammy-winning pop superstar Dua Lipa (Barbie), Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Emmy winner and comedy icon Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and the legendary Samuel L. Jackson.
Alfie is played by Chip, the real-life cat of supermodel Claudia Vaughn (née Schiffer).
The film will be released in theaters on February 2, 2024, and on a later date on Apple TV+.
