A new report claims Henry Cavill’s Voltron movie was always intended to go straight to streaming.
According to IGN, a source says Amazon greenlit the live-action Voltron movie with the intention of making it a streaming exclusive.
However, that doesn’t exactly fit with how this story played out over the past year.

Amazon Wouldn’t Confirm Streaming In 2025
Back in May 2025, The Wrap first reported that Henry Cavill’s Voltron movie would skip theaters and go straight to streaming.
At the time, Amazon didn’t confirm the release strategy.
A week later, producer Bob Koplar issued a vague statement about the movie wrapping production, but he also avoided saying whether Voltron would release in theaters or on Prime Video.
Koplar only said the movie would be “the Voltron experience our fans have been dreaming of.”
That’s not exactly the same thing as saying streaming was always the plan, and it’s obviously not what fans have been dreaming of (I count myself as one and still have my original Voltron from when I was a kid).

Amazon Only Confirmed It A Year Later
Amazon MGM Studios finally confirmed the streaming release during its slate presentation at Amazon Upfront two weeks ago.
The movie will debut on Prime Video, with no theatrical release announced. Amazon still has not revealed a release date, trailer, first look, marketing campaign, or any real promotional push.
For a movie starring Henry Cavill (rumored to have small role), based on a major ’80s brand, with Hasbro already making toys, the streaming release seems questionable.

Was Amazon Afraid Of A Theatrical Release?
While IGN’s update makes it sound as if streaming was always the plan, maybe Amazon looked at the theatrical market and decided Voltron was too risky.
Mortal Kombat II underperformed in theaters (but MK1 was said to be huge on streaming), and Masters of the Universe is tracking in the same nostalgia-heavy lane with a projected small $25M-$35M domestic opening.
Voltron fits that same category.
Amazon may have decided Prime Video was the safer play, unfortunately.
The flick also features a diverse and younger cast.

Plot Leaks Felt Like Theatrical Hype
The other odd part is the test screening leak.
Those spoilers made Voltron sound much bigger than a normal streaming dump.
The leak claimed the movie works as a sequel to the original cartoon, features a new war between the Galaxy Alliance and the Galra, and includes Henry Cavill in a smaller but important role connected to Princess Allura.
The leak also claimed the Voltron design is faithful and that Cavill has a standout sword fight.
Leaks like that usually are intentional to build buzz, as they make Voltron feel more like theatrical hype than a streaming dump.
