Guardians of the Galaxy Movie May Have Its Director With James Gunn

Things are coming together for the August 1, 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

The beginning of August saw Chris McCoy named as screenwriter to do rewrites on the script.

We’ve also seen a short plot description with Star-Lord front and center.

Now, a director is being sought with James Gunn of Super and Slither fame.

According to THR, Gunn is Marvel Studios’ top choice to helm the movie, with Peyton Reed (Bring It On, Yes Man) and the team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Half Nelson) as possible back-ups.

THR says that Marvel Studios likes Gunn’s “sensibility and his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror,” noting a “quality he shares with The Avengers director Joss Whedon.”

While Gunn may seem like an odd choice, he might be the perfect fit for a team like the Guardians of the Galaxy, which consists of Drax, Groot, Star-Lord, Gamora and the fan-favorite character, Rocket Raccoon. In addition, Marvel Studios seems to have a knack of picking “unknown” talented directors with their movies going on to become blockbusters.

And it already seems as if Gunn is a Marvel fan as he previously wasn’t too happy with how Warner Bros. handled the Green Lantern movie, but had only good things to say about The Avengers.

On a side note, Gunn has a local connection to Cosmic Book News as Gunn got his start with Lloyd Kaufman’s NYC-based Troma Entertainment.

Kaufman is currently filming the sequel, Return To The Class of Nuke’em High, right here in Western NY, the hometown of CBN.

Western NY has quite the indie horror scene as Cosmic Book News has recently visited the sets of the alien sci-fi movie Ombis as well as the Call of Duty: Undead movie.
