Godzilla Minus One Takes Home Best Visual Effects Oscar

Summary

  • Godzilla Minus One wins Best Visual Effects Oscar at 96th Academy Awards
  • Beat out Hollywood heavyweights with much larger budgets
  • Director Takashi Yamazaki pays tribute to late producer and expresses gratitude for the opportunities the film has opened up

Congratulations to Toho, Godzilla Minus One, director Takashi Yamazaki, the special effects team behind the movie and everyone involved, as the film has won the Best Visual Effects Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards that was held on Sunday night.

Godzilla Minus One at a budget of less than $15 million managed to stomp out Hollywood heavyweights with budgets of more than 20x including Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Apple and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, and what I thought might have won, Gareth Edwards’ The Creator.

ā€œHistory has been made! Thank you for all of your support!ā€ tweeted Toho.

Director Takashi Yamazaki also showed up at the Oscars with a golden Godzilla statue and paid tribute to the late Godzilla Minus One producer Shuji Abe. Find the full list of winners here including Robert Downey Jr.

ā€œI think Godzilla has opened up so many doors for us through this project so I don’t know where those doors are going to lead but I don’t want to turn down any opportunity that comes our way,ā€ said Yamazaki after winning the Oscar.

Godzilla Minus One has made over $106 million worldwide. Great film. Awesome to see especially in IMAX.
