Godzilla: King of the Monsters Box Office Has Slow Start

This past weekend saw Godzilla: King of the Monsters debut in theaters, but the film is off to a slow start at the box office as it underperformed and came in under estimates and expectations.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters only brought in $49 million domestically, which is under the $50-60 million estimates and well under the 2014 Godzilla‘s opening weekend of $93.1 million and Kong: Skull Island‘s $61 million from 2017.

WB and Legendary are now banking on the movie’s foreign gross, which brought in $130 million, to help cover the massive $170 million budget. King of the Monsters is also supposed to usher in Godzilla vs King Kong next year, but if this movie fails, it is wondered what will become of that flick (i.e. could the budget get cut?).

The Rotten Tomatoes score is only a 40% with 242 reviews counted; 86% of the audience did state they liked it. King of the Monsters also received a “B+” Cinemascore, and Metacritic has it at a 48. By comparison, the 2014 Godzilla came in with a 75% RT score, but only 66% of the audience stated they liked it.

What do you think went wrong with Godzilla: King of the Monsters? I have yet to see it myself, but I’ve heard it compared to Michael Bay’s Transformers movies. The 2014 movie could have also hurt the sequel, as the first flick was pretty much average. King of the Monsters also doesn’t have any big-name stars, and I also thought its marketing campaign was lackluster. There didn’t seem to be a lot of “hype” surrounding this film, and I also think they showed too much footage in trailers and revealed too much of the monsters.
