Take your hats off, folks, because we need to have a moment of silence as #RIPMCU continues! That’s right! Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps has bombed harder than initially thought, as the second weekend actuals have come in lower.
The second weekend actually comes in at $38.7M marking a massive 67.1% drop, one of the biggest ever for the MCU (see below).
The original estimates pegged a 55% to 60% drop, but that “devastating” 80% drop on its second Friday saw the estimates revised to $40M and a 66% drop.
Well, it’s worse, again coming in at $38.7M over the weekend, with a 67.1% drop.
The MCU now goes on a big hiatus, which seems to be exactly at the right time. Marvel pushed both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars back, likely knowing full well FF would bomb. There’s a reason Feige didn’t show up at Comic-Con.
DC is now on top. James Gunn’s Superman continues crushing Fantastic Four. As I went over, Superman only dropped 53.2% in its second weekend, bringing in over $58.4 million, following an opening of over $125 million. Gunn’s Superman is flying high with over $550M at the box office.
The budget is reported to be $200M, so that means FF needs to hit at least $500M to break even. I’ve been told the budget is a lot higher, actually north of $350M when all the reshoots are taken into account. If that is indeed the case, FF needs to hit $875M to break even, which is not happening.
Expect Fantastic Four to continue to plummet. Fans have already turned their attention to Spidey.
