Doctor Who Reportedly Dead At Disney+

Doctor Who Reportedly Dead At Disney+

Though not official, numerous reports are surfacing that the Doctor Who deal with Disney+ is dead and that the streamer won’t be financially supporting and producing Season 3.

Doctor Who is suffering from its worst ratings in the show’s 60-year history, and it’s known that the series never makes the Nielsen ratings charts. To boot, Disney has been slashing budgets and reducing output for its Disney+ shows, which include both Marvel and Star Wars.

YouTuber Claims Disney Wanted Full Control of Doctor Who Before Dropping Deal

Insider Says Disney Won’t Renew Doctor Who Deal

The latest comes again from YouTuber Tachyon Pulse Podcast who says, according to sources close to production that Disney won’t be extending the Doctor Who deal, effectively ending its involvement with the series:

“I’ve been able to speak exclusively to an insider I’ve spoken to repeatedly, about this, and they have confirmed that the word amongst the crew is that there is no extension to this deal.”

Doctor Who: Disney Demands Removal Of Russell T Davies

Disney Reportedly Wanted to Fire Davies, Pick New Doctor, and Control the Franchise

The YouTuber adds that if Disney did go through with Season 3, that they wanted full control over Doctor Who. He says that Disney not only wanted to pick the new showrunner, as they wanted Davies out following his woke content that tanked the series, but that Disney also wanted to pick who would be the next Doctor:

“Disney were demanding more now than just Russell T Davies being fired and getting a new Doctor. They were actually demanding to pick who the new showrunner would be and to pick who the doctor would be — effectively taking control of Doctor Who.”

The Youtuber further says Disney+ also wanted access to the entire library of Doctor Who, primarily the David Tennant and Matt Smith years, which get the views, but that the rights are wrapped up internationally.

What’s next for Doctor Who?

Again, official confirmation that Doctor Who is done at Disney+ hasn’t been announced.

The YouTuber adds that Sony happens to own Davies’ Bad Wolf production company, so an option could be for Doctor Who to continue at Amazon. However, similar to Disney, the YouTuber claims Amazon would also want the entire Doctor Who library, but that the BBC is against that idea.

Regarding that recent Season 2 finale and the regeneration into Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, the YouTuber doubts she will be the Doctor and says it seemed to be a “hail mary,” pass, a “desperate” act from Russell T Davies.

Per Davies own comments, it seems likely Doctor Who will be going on a hiatus, possibly for at least a couple years.
