Disney to Dump Entire 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' Series in a Month

It’s learned that Disney will be dumping all ten episodes to the upcoming Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man animated series in just a month’s time.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man release schedule

Disney+ has released the schedule for the series, which begins with the first two episodes on Wednesday, January 29. Three episodes will follow the next week, with two episodes released each week thereafter, concluding in week four.

  • Wednesday, January 29: Episode 1 and 2
  • Wednesday, February 5: Episode 3, 4 and 5
  • Wednesday, February 12: Episode 7 and 8
  • Wednesday, February 19: Episode 9 and 10

Doesn’t bode well

The release strategy is somewhat surprising, as Disney+ typically rolls out shows week by week. However, when a show seems likely to underperform, they tend to release episodes all at once, as they did with Marvel’s Echo. Similarly, all the episodes of What If…? were released in a single week, a series that never garnered a large audience. While X-Men ’97 was released weekly, it’s also known that the show doesn’t attract many viewers. Now, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set to wrap up in just four weeks (it’s been getting hammered on social media by fans).

It’s worth noting that the upcoming Marvel Zombies animated series, which focuses on Ms. Marvel (yay!), consists of only four episodes. Similarly, The Eyes of Wakanda animated series is also limited to four episodes. It’s very possible that Disney+ could release all episodes of both shows in a single day or split them across two release weeks. Four weeks seems unlikely.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man already a bomb?

The series was originally set to be in the MCU but they changed things up. It’s probably a good thing it’s no longer set in the MCU as it can’t damage the MCU’s Spider-Man brand (but it can damage the overall Spidey brand).

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is the product of the same “woke” creatives at Marvel who have been criticized for their handling of the MCU post-Infinity War. Both Norman and Harry Osborn have been race-swapped, and it doesn’t seem like MJ will even appear in the series. It’s set in an “alternate” universe, seemingly tailored for modern-day audiences. Similar to What If…?, the animation quality also looks horrible (Feige, since you’re bringing back Netflix’s Daredevil, how about reviving Earth’s Mightiest Heroes while you’re at it?).

Marvel getting back on the right track

It seems like Feige and Marvel are finally getting back on the right track, as they’ve retooled Daredevil: Born Againjust as I said. Rumors suggest Feige has also fired the “woke” producers responsible for ruining the MCU. Recently, news broke that Nate Moore is leaving Marvel, following the exits of Victoria Alonso and others. Additionally, the individuals behind the Disney+ MCU shows are no longer part of Marvel, as Marvel TV has been restructured (She-Hulk Season 2 isn’t happening, etc.).

That said, Marvel still has plenty of garbage in the pipeline, including Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and the previously mentioned Marvel Zombies (confirmed to feature Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, and Kate Bishop). There’s no word yet on whether Eyes of Wakanda will be any good.

Captain America: Brave New World is also on the horizon, but it doesn’t sound promising. Thunderbolts, which follows a depressed Yelena, doesn’t seem particularly inspiring either. Fantastic Four has potential, but it’s said to feature a female Silver Surfer and rumors suggest it centers on Sue Storm, with Reed Richards portrayed as holding her back. I’ve heard it’s been reworked, so hopefully, they’ve addressed the concerns.

Wonder Man is also set to be released on Disney+ described similar in tone to She-Hulk. Ironheart is also getting released, which sounds like a complete disaster featuring gang members turned activists.

The MCU probably won’t be good again until Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man 4. We’ll also get Secret Wars, Black Panther 3, and then the X-Men. Cross your fingers.
