The Disney+ streaming service has canceled Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. after two seasons which was a reboot of the popular ’90s medical drama Doogie Howser, M.D. starring Neil Patrick Harris.
The Disney+ series doesn’t feature Doogie Howser, but instead features Lahela ‘Doogie’ Kamealoha, played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, as a 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager in modern-day Hawaii.
News of the cancellation comes after Season 2 ended five months ago.
Recently saw a slew of cancellations at both Disney+ and Hulu, including the removal of content from dozens of projects such as Willow, Marvel’s Project Hero, Marvel’s MPower, and Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever.
Recently saw it learned that Disney+ lost 11.7 million subscribers, with the bulk of the loss coming from India and HotStar due to losing the license to Cricket, but the drop also includes a decrease of 300,000 in the U.S. and Canada, the second time the amount of subscribers in North America has dropped.
Here is the official description for Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.:
Dr. Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha, a 16-year-old prodigy, juggles a budding medical career with the daily challenges of teenage life. At the hospital, Lahela’s genius confounds patients and colleagues, who dub her “Doogie” after the ‘90s TV series “Doogie Howser, M.D.” At home, her doting dad, Benny, and career-driven mom, Clara (Chief of Medicine and Lahela’s boss), fear she’s growing up too fast. With support from her caring — and comical — ohana (family and friends), Lahela forges her own path.
In “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” 16-year-old prodigy Dr. Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha juggles a budding medical career with the daily challenges of teenage life. At the hospital, Lahela’s genius confounds both patients and colleagues, who dub her “Doogie” after the ‘90s TV series “Doogie Howser, M.D.” At home, her doting dad, Benny, and her career-driven mom, Clara, the hospital’s Chief of Medicine and Lahela’s boss, fear she’s growing up too fast.
Lahela struggles to operate in two very different worlds and stay balanced. Fortunately, her free-spirited older brother Kai and idiosyncratic younger brother Brian Patrick help keep her grounded. Steph, her wisecracking best friend, can always be counted on to lighten the mood, frequently climbing through Lahela’s bedroom window to costar in TikTok videos or dish on Lahela’s crush, Walter. Fellow medical residents Noelani and Charles, as well as hot-shot heart surgeon Dr. Lee, joke about the obvious gap in age and interests, but genuinely respect Lahela’s expertise.
With support from her caring — and comical — ohana (family and friends), Lahela is determined to make the most of her teenage years and forge her own path.
