David Goyer Explains What’s Wrong With Marvel Studios Approach; Why Man of Steel & Batman Are Better As More Standalone Films

David Goyer, arguably the hottest writer in Hollywood, helped pen the billion dollar The Dark Knight Trilogy with Christopher Nolan as well as the Man of Steel.

Goyer is rumored for the Justice League movie, has Da Vinci’s Demons premiering tomorrow on Starz, as well as is directing and writing an adaptation of The Count Of Monte Cristo.

Might as well throw in that Goyer helped write the insanely successful Call of Duty: Black Ops II video game.

Goyer is also a huge comic book fan, having brought the obscure character Blade to life on the big screen – another billion dollar franchise – which helped launch all the popular superhero movies, which includes the Marvel Studios movies and The Avengers.

Speaking of the latter, one argument that always arises amongst the fans is that Warner Bros. should go the direction of Marvel Studios and use their slate of DC superhero movies to directly lead up to the Justice League movie.

Not so fast, David Goyer says in the following.

Though we have heard the new Superman movie is spearheading a new DC shared movie universe, Goyer says that like the movies in The Dark Knight Trilogy, he took the Man of Steel movie as if it was the only movie – so that he could put his “everything” into it and not worry about what comes next – and doesn’t like “sequel bait.”

“One of the things we dealt with on the Batman films is, Chris dislikes it when you plan something, when you say, ‘I’m going to follow this up in the next film,” Goyer told EW. “He’s always said put everything you have into this film and then worry about the next film later. That gives the film its own integrity as opposed to being part of an overall plan. So of course the comic book fans, it’s hard not to think about [crossovers] but I, having done three Batman films and worked in that way, it’s definitely the approach we took with Man of Steel.”

David Goyer probably just told us what went wrong with Iron Man 2 as well as the end of Thor and the entire Captain America movie.
