Two days ago saw word hit that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to star in Captain America 3, with the storyline adapting the Marvel Comics Civil War event that pitted hero vs. hero, and namely, Iron Man vs. Captain America.
Interestingly enough, the directors of Captain America 2 and Captain America 3, Anthony and Joe Russo, talked about Civil War being a part of the Marvel Studios universe about a month ago where Joe Russo stated it was too complex and highly unlikely.
You know it’s really a function of how much story can you fit into this universe. Certainly we know Thanos is coming. There is a a lot of story real estate that needs to be covered in order to tee up what is clearly going to be a massive storyline. Would something like Civil War ever fit into that? I don’t know. It’s complex. There is a lot of characters. Marvel doesn’t have ownership over some of the key players in Civil War. I would say it is probably doubtful, but you know I don’t run Marvel, so I can never say to you that it couldn’t happen, but I would say it’s probably highly unlikely.
The original report surrounding Captain America 3 and Civil War stated the event would play out into the Marvel movies for years to come. It also said there was some contention getting Robert Downey Jr. signed, which is possibly why Joe Russo was hesitant about talking about Civil War. Of course, it’s also possible that Joe Russo simply wanted to steer people away from the fact that Captain America 3 will feature Civil War and lead into The Avengers 4 and the other Marvel movies.
Regarding Marvel Studios not having the rights to the key players that took part in the comic book storyline, obviously similar to the other Marvel movies, the films would be an adaptation of the comic book event and go a different route.
Marvel has yet to officially confirm the news.
