It is announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty gets a new writer with Michael Waldron who also wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and is set to write Avengers: Secret Wars.
Worth a mention is that Waldron was attached as showrunner to Loki, but left the series for Doctor Strange 2. Head Writer Eric Martin came in and then rewrote most of Loki Season 1 and wrote Season 2, so Waldron apparently really didn’t have much to do with Loki.
The news also confirms suspicions that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s Jeff Loveness has exited Avengers: The Kang Dynasty; however, it has also been said Waldron was departing Secret Wars, so we see that half of the rumor is apparently true.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton also left The Kang Dynasty with the reason reported to focus on the Wonder Man Disney+ series and other projects, thought to also include Shang-Chi 2.
As I previously said, you don’t leave a big Avengers movie for something like a Marvel Disney+ series, so what is really going on?
Sam Raimi to direct Secret Wars?
What I think is going on is that Sam Raimi will be directing Avengers: Secret Wars Part 1 and Part 2. Recent rumors again offer Sam Raimi is up to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, who also directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Per rumor and speculation, Kang Dynasty might get canceled, so if so, maybe Kevin Feige is going with Avengers: Secret Wars Part 1 and Part 2, instead.
What is interesting in Deadline‘s “exclusive,” about Michael Waldron writing Kang Dynasty, is there is no mention of the supposed star of the flick, Jonathan Majors.
Reports offer Marvel may be moving away from Jonathan Majors as Kang and will focus on Doctor Doom. A recent rumor offers Cillian Muprhy is Marvel’s top choice for the role who will first briefly appear in Fantastic Four.
Rumors also offer FF, Deadpool 3, Spider-Man 4, and Shang-Chi 2 will lay the foundation for Secret Wars as well. Maybe that is in part why Destin Daniel Cretton left so he can set up a worthwhile Shang-Chi sequel that directly connects to Secret Wars?
It’s obvious that Kevin Feige and Marvel have lost their way and that Phases 4 and 5 seem like a big mess. Feige no longer has James Gunn and the Russos and desperately needs a creative team to pick up the slack.
Raimi was Feige’s go-to corporate stooge to direct Doctor Strange 2 when Scott Derrickson departed over creative differences, so why not bring Raimi back for the Secret Wars movies? Raimi can get the job done and be told whatever creative direction that Feige has planned (good or bad).
Avengers: The Kany Dynasty is due out on May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars on May 7, 2027, so there is a lot of time to get the MCU on track. The MCU just suffered its two biggest blows with the releases of Quantumania and The Marvels.
