Following up on my earlier article comparing The Avengers: Endgame to Batman vs. Superman, it is learned the box office estimates have plummeted, presently as much as 72%, a drop more than Infinity War.
Earlier today saw Deadline spin things as if Endgame was going to beat out the record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the second-weekend box office of $149.2M, but they failed to mention that Endgame was actually trailing Star Wars in the dailies, which I was happy to point out.
Now in their latest update, they note The Avengers: Endgame is estimated to have a $44M second Friday, which is -72% from a week ago, and that it might not beat Star Wars.
If the -72% trend continues throughout the weekend, Endgame could finish under $100 million for its second weekend, but that is unlikely. Also worth a note is that Endgame‘s second Friday of $44M is less than The Force Awakens‘ $49 million-plus.
Update: The second Friday estimate is actually lower coming in at $40,637,000 with a 74.2% drop, and now it is estimated to have a second opening weekend of $146.9M, less than Star Wars.
Infinity War saw a 70% drop from its first Friday to its second Friday (which includes Thursday previews) and saw only a 55.5% drop from the first weekend to second weekend when the second Saturday and Sunday numbers were factored in; so Endgame still has a chance of beating Star Wars for the second-weekend box office record as long as it doesn’t drop more than 58% from weekend to weekend. If the numbers for Endgame continue to be similar to Infinity War, Endgame could still finish with a second-weekend box office of around $150M and still manage to beat Star Wars.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens saw only a 58.6% drop from its first Friday to second Friday and only a 39.8% drop from the first weekend to second weekend, but Star Wars had the benefit of its second weekend opening on Christmas.
Estimates for The Avengers: Endgame‘s second-weekend opening now have it anywhere from around $100-30 million to as high as $177 million, depending on how well Saturday and Sunday do at the box office.
Regarding Batman vs. Superman, its second Friday saw a massive 81.6% drop, with its second weekend dropping 69.1%.
Make no mistake while its Friday numbers are down, The Avengers: Endgame is still crushing it at the box office as it has a current worldwide gross of over $1.785 billion, with almost $474 million in the U.S.
