Paramount has confirmed the upcoming animated Avatar: The Last Airbender movie will not receive a theatrical release, which was originally slated for October 2026.
Instead, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will premiere exclusively on Paramount+ in Fall 2026, bypassing theaters entirely.
The announcement comes as part of a larger push by Paramount+ to position itself as the exclusive home of Avatar Studios content, expanding the animated universe with both a feature-length film and a brand-new series.
The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender Details
The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender is based on the original animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
The story follows Avatar Aang as he learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction, setting him on a global quest before it falls into the wrong hands.
The film is directed by Lauren Montgomery, with Steve Ahn and William Mata co-directing. DiMartino and Konietzko serve as producers alongside Latifa Ouaou and Maryann Garger. Jeremy Zuckerman returns to compose the score.
The cast includes newly announced voices Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan, joining previously revealed cast members Dave Bautista, Eric Nam, Jessica Matten, Dionne Quan, Román Zaragoza, Steven Yeun, and Peta Sergeant.
Avatar: Seven Havens Series Also Announced
Alongside the movie, Paramount+ also revealed a new 2D animated series titled Avatar: Seven Havens.
Set after the events of The Legend of Korra, the series takes place in a fractured world following a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she is the new Avatar, but in this era, the title marks her as a threat rather than a hero. Hunted by human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their origins and protect the last remaining strongholds of civilization.
Avatar: Seven Havens will consist of two seasons, each made up of 13 half-hour episodes, and is produced by Nickelodeon Animation. DiMartino and Konietzko return as co-creators and executive producers.
Paramount+ Bets Big on Avatar Streaming
Paramount says the decision reinforces Paramount+ as the central destination for the animated Avatar franchise.
The original Avatar: The Last Airbender series has ranked among Nielsen’s Top 100 most-streamed titles for 17 weeks since arriving on the platform in March 2023, alongside The Legend of Korra.
With the new movie skipping theaters and heading straight to streaming, Paramount+ is clearly doubling down on Avatar as a core franchise meant to drive subscriptions rather than box office revenue.
