Andy Muschietti on DCU Batman: ‘We Have to Wait a Couple of Months’

Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, says he’ll have more to share about his DCU Batman movie soon, but his cautious answer suggests things might be on hold as Warner Bros. Discovery faces an imminent sale.

“We Have to Wait a Couple of Months”

Speaking with Variety at the premiere of HBO Max’s Welcome to Derry, Muschietti and his producing partner and sister, Barbara Muschietti, were asked about the status of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which was announced in 2023 as part of James Gunn’s DCU.

“The intention is yes, but we can’t talk about it,” Barbara said when asked if the film was still happening.

Andy added, “We have to wait a few, a couple of months to start talking about it.”

He then caught himself, saying, “I screwed it already.”

That offhand comment immediately fueled speculation that the project’s future may be uncertain, likely tied to the pending Warner Bros. Discovery sale that could see new ownership take over by mid-2025.

Gunn’s Batman Still on Hold

As previously reported, James Gunn’s DCU Batman is not expected to move forward until after Matt Reeves films The Batman: Part II in 2026. That means if The Brave and the Bold happens, it wouldn’t begin production until 2027, the same year Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow releases and after his DC contract expires.

As we went over, it appears as if most of Gunn’s DCU is currently on hold pending the studio’s sale. Projects like Sgt. Rock and Swamp Thing have already been delayed, and there’s growing concern inside Warner Bros. about Gunn’s creative direction following the poor reception to Peacemaker Season 2 and the underwhelming performance of Superman.

“A Couple of Months” Tells the Story

Muschietti’s “couple of months” remark likely isn’t about development timelines; it’s about waiting for corporate clarity. Once a sale or new leadership is confirmed, the new leadership at Warner Bros. will decide which projects move forward, which are retooled, and which are shelved entirely.

For now, it sounds like the DCU Batman is one of many projects waiting for that decision.
