Stargate Series Canceled At Amazon: Joe Mallozzi Responds

The new Stargate series at Amazon is officially dead.

Months after Prime Video announced a new series from longtime franchise veteran Martin Gero, Amazon MGM Studios has pulled the plug on the project in what looks to be another major casualty of the studio’s ongoing internal shakeups.

The news was confirmed by longtime Stargate producer Joe Mallozzi on X, who previously hyped the series and promised fans they would become “one of the most dialed-in fandoms in sci-fi history.”

Michael Shanks, who played Dr. Daniel Jackson, added on X, “Yep. They did that.”

Joe Mallozzi Confirms Stargate Is Dead

“Sadly, it’s true,” Mallozzi posted. “Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.”

Mallozzi explained that Martin Gero had spent more than two years developing the show, crafting what he described as a continuation that respected the franchise instead of trying to reinvent it.

“It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family,” Mallozzi said.

According to Mallozzi, the series had been officially greenlit in November of 2025. Now, that vision is gone.

“We’ll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters — or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past,” he wrote.

“My heart breaks.”

Why was Stargate canceled?

According to Deadline, the cancellation came very late in the process. The series reportedly completed a 20-week writers room and had already entered pre-production in the UK.

The report says the decision came down to Amazon leadership feeling the project’s “vision and creative direction” no longer aligned with the company’s programming strategy.

Apparently, the divide was so significant that Amazon chose to scrap the entire project instead of reworking it.

Variety adds in their report: “Amazon execs were concerned that Gero’s take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise’s already dedicated fanbase.”

Update: Mallozzi responded to the claim on X: “Nope. No. Sorry. Gonna have to push back on this. We were ever mindful of creating a show that would have broad appeal.”

Ironically, the Stargate reboot had originally been one of the first major greenlights under Amazon MGM Television head Peter Friedlander after he joined the studio in late 2025.

However, the executives who reportedly championed the series — Nick Pepper and Matt King — have both since exited Amazon following a restructuring overseen by Brett Fetter, the company’s new Head of Worldbuilding & Genre Series.

Familiar Faces Were Planned to Return

One of the biggest reveals from Mallozzi’s statement is confirmation that the new series would have brought back legacy characters from previous Stargate shows.

Fans had long wondered if the reboot would acknowledge SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe, or if Amazon planned a full reset.

Mallozzi’s comments now make it clear the plan was to continue existing canon while also serving as a jumping-on point for new viewers.

“As of today, officially, that original vision is no more,” he said.

Another Amazon MGM Franchise Falls Apart

The cancellation adds to growing questions surrounding Amazon MGM’s handling of the studio’s major franchises following the departures of Jennifer Salke and multiple TV executives tied to the MGM side of the business.

As previously reported, Amazon had also stalled projects tied to James Bond, Robocop, Tomb Raider, and Stargate following its MGM acquisition.

Deadline notes Amazon could eventually revisit Stargate with a completely different creative team, possibly someone without ties to the original franchise who could offer what the studio considers a “fresh perspective.”

For longtime fans, though, it sounds like the version they actually wanted is now gone.

What Was the Stargate Reboot?

The canceled series was set to revive the long-running sci-fi franchise that began with Roland Emmerich’s 1994 Stargate movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader.

The franchise later exploded into multiple TV series including Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe.

Martin Gero — who worked on all three shows — was attached as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the canceled reboot.

Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich, Brad Wright, and Joe Mallozzi were also involved.
