Aaron Pierre has been making the press rounds as of late for Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and has talked about playing Green Lantern John Stewart in James Gunn’s DCU Lanterns series.
What does Aaron Pierre say about John Stewart?
While being interviewed by the WHOLETUSOUT YouTube channel, Aaron Pierre is asked how does it feel to carry the Torch? He replies:
“I appreciate that question. Truly, I am over the moon. I’m thrilled, and I think if I wanted to share anything at all it would be just that I’m going to do my utmost to serve John Stewart and serve the Green Lantern Corp to the very best of my capabilities. I’m really excited for everyone to join us on this ride. Yeah, thank you.”
Obviously, the actor can’t reveal specific details but it’s good to hear how excited he is to play John Stewart, who has become an iconic and fan-favorite character in the world of DC. Recently, Pierrre also shared his excitement about playing the role, and when the casting news came out said, “Tremendously honoured and abundantly grateful. A dream come true. Thank you all for the love and beautiful energy. Thank you for welcoming me to DC. Let’s work!”
In an interview with EW.com, the actor also reveals he hasn’t seen the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds, but he says it’s “most definitely” on his watch list. His intro to the character? The animated version: “I think Justice League Unlimited might have been one of my first introductions to John Stewart,” he said.
What is the Lanterns series about?
The series pairs Aaron Pierre as John Stewart with Kyle Chandler as Green Lantern Hal Jordan. Here is a released synopsis:
The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Chris Mundy is the showrunner with the series written by Damon Lindelof and Tom King.
“Chris, Damon, and Tom have put this thing together. It’s another project that’s been blessed from the beginning,” explained Gunn at the recent NYCC. “It’s something when we first started the DCU, in the first couple weeks of heading this up, we got together with a group of of writers, and Tom King was one of those writers.”
Gunn continued, “And we were in this room, and we came up with sort of this concept for Lanterns, and then we got Chris and Damon involved, and it just kind of has come out very easily, very naturally, it’s a much more — it’s a very grounded series, a very real series which is strange to say in a Green Lantern show but it’s going to be something like nobody’s ever seen before, and I can’t wait for people to catch it on HBO when it comes out.”
