Godzilla Minus One reactions are in as an advanced screening was held by Toho with reviews revealing the film to be a masterpiece, awesome, and more.
The film is described as taking place in postwar Japan where a new terror rises in the form of Godzilla. Japan faces new fear in the form of Godzilla with it questioned if the devastated people of Japan will be able to survive… let alone fight back.
Toho also recently revealed that Godzilla Minus One tickets go on sale as part of the Godzilla Day event on Nov. 3 which includes Early Access Fan Event Screenings on Wednesday, November 29 in IMAX and large format theaters across the country.
Godzilla Day will feature Godzilla-size experiences, exclusive product launches, streaming content, and more.
What are the reactions?
The Godzilla Minus One reactions have hit social media including the flick is “amazing,” “awesome,” “heavy,” “a masterpiece,” and that “it will make you cry.”
“Godzilla Minus One apparently delivered,” states a tweet from a fan. “Not to sound too cocky because I didn’t make those movies but Godzilla proves time and time again he’s the GOAT of the genre regardless of his role or tone of the film. There will be comparisons to Shin Godzilla it’s gonna be interesting.”
The fan added, “Period setting appeals to me more. Tone-wise I don’t expect a surprise but a good movie in its own right judged on its own independent from other films. Comparisons should be expected if for the first time Toho releases two (live action) movies back to back with this sort of tone.”
Another fan added, “The anti-war message is appealing to me, an idea we crucially need at this moment. Where the politicians love the fact that we justify their wars with our outrage, I hope this story tackles not only the atrocities Japan committed but also that the bombs were not necessary.”
Japanese reactions
Screenshots from the Japanese audience that got to see the film early also offer more of the same.
“Tonight I was invited to a preview of Godzilla Minus One. There was so much awesomeness and heaviness that I can’t put into words, and so much sadness that I wanted to say it out loud,” says the review. “Even though it was in the complete opposite direction from Shin Godzilla, it gave me the same excitement as that time. Godzilla is alive.”
Another review offers: “Watched Godzilla Minus One. Honestly impressed. This is the most beautiful Godzilla movie in Godzilla history, and I believe it is director Takashi Yamazaki’s masterpiece. I immediately informed an old acquaintance of mine, an advertising producer. It’s probably the first time I’ve done something like that. Ryunosuke Kamiki looked back several times, and especially groaned the second time. Unparalleled tears of sadness!”
Another: “I was shown a preview of Godzilla Minus On and it was amazingly interesting! A strong anti-war movie. At the same time, there are many scenes that make me think, ‘I wanted to see this kind of battle,’ and I can’t help but get excited. I’ve seen all the Godzilla movies, but
this one is my favorite. It will make you cry, it will touch your heart in many ways, and it is a masterpiece!”
Director Takashi Yamazaki caught wind of the reactions and said, “I’m glad that my anti-war-message was properly conveyed.”
