Amazon Developing Streaming Video Game Service

With movies and TV shows already up in the cloud, it’s inevitable that video games will be joining them, as it is learned Amazon is developing their own streaming video game service.

Just think: No more expensive consoles and no more running out of space, as games will be available at users’ fingertips, much like movies and TV shows are for streaming services such as Amazon and Netflix.

The Information reports that not only is Amazon developing their own streaming videogame service, but Google and Microsoft have been as well. It’s confirmed Amazon has been talking with games publishers about distributing their titles through this game service, which is expected to launch next year at the earliest. It’s unknown if it will be a part of Amazon Prime or priced as a separate platform.

Details include that instead of having to purchase discs, the games will all run on powerful computers housed at various data centers around the globe, which will not only eliminate the need for a console, it will allow much less computing muscle, benefiting devices such as smartphone or tablets, and there will be no need to download updates (as everything will be done server-side on Amazon’s cloud).

Speaking of downloads, it may be possible that the games available on the cloud will not be needed to download, saving many countless and frustrating hours. I look forward to the day when I can play Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies without my game losing its connection or the party-host ending the game early! Also, no more 2-disc installs a la Red Dead Redemption 2!

Regarding Google, last fall the company announced a preview of a game streaming service called Project Stream which runs on PCs and Chromebooks. Electronic Arts also announced a new online game development platform and streaming service called Project Atlas that is in the works.
