HBO Watchmen Series Pilot Gets A Director

HBO Watchmen Series Pilot Gets A Director

With the HBO Watchmen series in production and following the series getting a pilot order, now it’s learned the first episode has a director.

Nicole Kassell will direct and executive produce the HBO Watchmen pilot from Damon Lindelof, with Kassell having previously directed episodes of HBO and Lindelof’s The Leftovers, and Kassell is also known for directing episodes of The Americans, Vinyl, American Crime, The Following, Better Call Saul, The Killing and The Closer.

Watchmen will mark HBO’s first superhero series and one that looks to be mature or R-rated as well.

The HBO Watchmen series is also independent of the Zack Snyder 2009 movie, but obviously will adapt the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons DC Comics graphic novel.

Watchmen features the characters Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Comedian, Rorschach, Ozymandias, and Dr. Manhattan.

Watchmen takes place in an alternate world where the mere presence of American superheroes changed history: The US won the Vietnam War, Nixon is still president, and the cold war is in full effect.  It begins with a murder-mystery before unfolding into a planet-altering conspiracy: When a retired hero is killed, his former teammates must investigate. The conspiracy they uncover will entwine their secret traumas and twisted psychologies, ultimately asking where the fine line is drawn between heroes and villains?
