This should come as no surprise to readers of this site, but it’s learned Ike Perlmutter’s Marvel Comics Creative Committee interfered with James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie, or at the very least caused some kind of problem.
The Marvel Comics Creative Committee consists of Alan Fine, Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada and Brian Bendis, which are the same group of guys responsible for cancelling all the popular Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning Marvel COSMIC comic books that inspired the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
Perlmutter and the MCCC have also been blamed with problems ranging from The Avengers: Age of Ultron to Captain America: Civil War to the reason why Joss Whedon is now on Justice League, Batgirl and by all accounts is heavily involved with WB’s DC Comics cinematic universe and is no longer at Marvel.
The good news is that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had Perlmutter and the MCCC removed from any further involvement in the movies, but the bad news is they are still involved with Marvel.
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Facebook to offer that things got messy with the MCCC in regards to “villain plot stuff,” which we can assume would be for Ronan. Gunn was asked: do you have a least favorite scene or one you wish you would’ve done a bit different after watching both guardians movies? His response:
There is some messy villain plot stuff in the first movie I’d like to deal with again. There was a committee working for Marvel at the time (now defunct) who had a lot of input, and that was primarily where it ended up. It just got a little messy.
Now that’s rather interesting as Ronan was a pretty weak villain, IMO. I do wonder what Gunn originally wanted to do?
It’s a shame if the MCCC really screwed things up. If you happen to follow the comics, you know how bad Bendis’ Guardians of the Galaxy that he snaked from Abnett and Lanning is, and you also know Joe Quesada is no fan of Marvel COSMIC. These guys should have never been let anywhere near the Guardians of the Galaxy movie in the first place.
I’ll also add that Perlmutter and the MCCC are in charge of Marvel Comics, Marvel TV, Marvel gaming and Marvel merchandise, which explains a lot and why the comics and Marvel TV have been so bad. This is also the reason why the Marvel Studios movies will never connect with Marvel TV–because head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb is chums with the MCCC, and it’s also why the comics have been so bad as Marvel Comics EIC Axel Alonso and Tom Brevoort fall under Perlmutter and his goon squad as well.
I’ve said this before, but it’s worth stating again: I wish Disney’s Bob Iger would fire Perlmutter, the entire MCCC, Loeb, Alonso, Wacker and Brevoort and put guys in charge that respect the material and fans. I really can’t see Marvel TV or Comics getting any better until they are all gone. Further evidence this is true comes from early reviews stating Inhumans is simply awful. As we see, it’s just another mess up from Perlmutter and the MCCC from a long line of mess ups.
