Good news for fans of Spider-Man and Mary Jane, Zendaya is not playing the character in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Zendaya recently appeared at the MTV Movie Awards where she confirms her character is “100% Michelle.”
“My character is 100% Michelle. That’s her name. I promise you, I am not lying. She’s definitely a different character. I think this is a character that I can have fun with and just really create what I wanted to make her. The director had a lot of really cool ideas how to make her weird and interesting and cool. She says weird things at the wrong time, but I think that’s why people like her. It was nice. She’s like my spriit animal, like how I feel in the inside.”
Originally it was rumored Zendaya was playing the red-haired Mary Jane from the comics, with it even said Peter referred to her in Spider-Man: Homecoming as “MJ” some time near the end of the movie. However, fans weren’t big at the idea of replacing such an iconic character, and now we see there’s nothing to worry about.
