With Spring right around the corner and Easter not too far behind, is anyone really surprised that Hop has taken the lead? Of course, children’s films (even seasonal ones) not named Toy Story have a propensity to tale off before a brief resurgence during the week of school vacations and/or holidays.

1. Rango – $113.8 million
2. Battle: LA – $78.5 million
3. Limitless – $55.6 million
4. The Lincoln Lawyer – $39.6 million
5. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules – $38.4 million
It’s not a surprise that the film with the biggest hype entering the first quarter of this year happens to be the box office leader for cumulative gross. Rango continues to have more screenings per week than films released some time afterwards such as the disappointing Red Riding Hood ($32 million gross). It looks like the aliens that invaded LA will not catch Johnny Depp’s creature feature, but with summer blockbusters releasing in about a month the $100 – $150 million dollar gross range will be considered chump change in comparison.
