Captain Marvel Trailer Explained

Captain Marvel Trailer Explained

With the release of the full Captain Marvel trailer, let’s take a look at what the footage reveals, which includes references to the 90s, Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy and more.

Lots more screenshots from the trailer can be found here.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel seemingly drops out of the sky and crash lands in a Blockbuster video store. Any kid who grew up in the 90s (when the movie is set) will have memories of going to Blockbuster as streaming video wasn’t yet available. Blockbuster was also the place to rent the latest Nintendo games!

Captain Marvel

We see Carol Danvers is already in her Kree uniform, which is because not only is she a half-Kree half-human warrior, but she is also a member of the elite Kree military team Starforce. She crashes in Los Angeles, where it’s learned this is her first time back on Earth in a very, very long time, and she’s not sure what to make of it.

Captain Marvel

Brie Larson previously said Captain Marvel could move planets, and while she doesn’t do so in the trailer, she still is pretty darn powerful as she survives the fall into the Blockbuster store and her powers are shown off including super strength and the power to absorb and manipulate energy.

Captain Marvel

From there, Captain Marvel runs into Samuel L. Jackson de-aged 25 years as the young Nick Fury, whose first alien encounter happens to be Carol Danvers. “Space invasion. Big car chase,” he tells her. “Truth be told, I was ready to hang it up ’til I met you today.”

Captain Marvel

The trailer then takes us to what looks like Hala, the Kree homeworld, and reveals some moments from Carol’s life. It appears as if she is experimented upon or somehow given her powers (the writer said they are going a different origin route than the comics due to being too similar to Green Lantern).

Captain Mavel

Gemma Chan is revealed as the blue-skinned sniper Minn-Erva alongside Captain Marvel as part of Starforce (to the left).

Captain Marvel

Jude Law is also featured as the leader of Starforce, but interestingly enough, Marvel has yet to confirm he is playing Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel from the comics. He has a mentor-mentee relationship with Carol, and he views her and her powers as a key asset to the Kree cause.

Captain Marvel

Lashana Lynch’s Maria Rambeau is shown, with it previously revealed she does have a daughter, which is probably Monica Rambeua, who in the comics also took on the Captain Marvel name. The movie sees Maria and Carol having come up together in the Air Force as two of the only female pilots, and they forged a deep friendship.

Captain Marvel

The villains are revealed with the Skrulls and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, which is the leader, and who is also undercover as a SHIELD agent, as the green-skinned reptilian aliens have the ability to shape shift.

Captain Marvel

Following the Skrull reveal, we see a nice old lady. Wham! Captain Marvel takes her out! Gotta be a darn and dirty Skrull!

Captain Marvel

The trailer also offers a first look at Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, who like Fury, is a low-level agent of SHIELD and also de-aged 25 years.

Captain Marvel

Lee Pace as Ronan is also back for Captain Marvel, who was the villain of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie. As this is set in the past, Ronan is still a high-level ranking member of the Kree.

Captain Marvel

The trailer offers a nod to the recent The Avengers: Infinity War post-credit scene as Fury apparently has a version of the pager he used to call Captain Marvel following Thanos wiping out half the universe.

Captain Marvel

Comic book fans should recognize Captain Marvel’s helmet (which also looks to be a part of the Hasbro action figure line).

Captain Marvel

The end of the trailer seemingly shows a fully powered Carol Danvers Captain Marvel. Kevin Feige previously revealed she is Marvel’s most powerful superhero to date.

Captain Marvel has a  March 8, 2019 release directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and stars Academy Award winner Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

The movie follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, the film is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
