Deadpool Cartoon In Development At Disney Confirms Rob Liefeld

Rob Liefeld, the creator behind the Merc with a Mouth, confirms on social media that Disney is developing a new Deadpool cartoon.

“I know a Deadpool cartoon is coming. sooner than later. I live in Southern California, so I know things given the proximity to Hollywood. I have no idea if it’s any good or which version of Deadpool it portrays,” tweeted Liefeld on Tuesday.

Fox was supposed to release a Deadpool cartoon

Prior to the Disney-Fox deal, at one time a Deadpool adult animated series was being developed for FX by Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover. The series got so far as receiving a 10-episode order and was supposed to premiere on FX’s comedy-focused FXX network, but was abruptly canceled. Donald Glover then took to social media to release a “script,” which placed the blame on Marvel for the cancellation. FX CEO John Landgraf also confirmed it was Marvel that decided to not go forward with the series as Marvel didn’t want to show what the Glover brothers wrote, assumed to mean R-rated material. As Rob Liefeld notes, regarding what Disney does with a Deadpool cartoon remains to be seen. Will it fall under Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios? Or Marvel TV? Will it be R-rated? Will it be the Donald Glover version?

Under Feige, Marvel Studios is developing the What If? animated series for the Disney Plus streaming network; however, it has been reported the Disney Plus streaming service will be family friendly, meaning an R-rated Deadpool cartoon wouldn’t fit. Of course, there is always the possibility the Deadpool cartoon could be PG-13.

Perhaps a better choice, Marvel TV is developing five new adult animated series for HULU with M.O.D.O.K., Hit Monkey, the Tigra & Dazzler Show, Howard the Duck, and Marvel’s The Offenders, so an adult Deadpool cartoon sounds like it would fit nicely with those.

Additional Deadpool live-action movies are also slated to be released by Disney, which will be R-rated, with Ryan Reynolds returning who recently hinted at a reboot. In addition, Disney CEO Bob Iger has said there is room for R-rated Marvel properties as part of a separate brand.
