‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Bombing At Chinese Box Office

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Bombing At Chinese Box Office

Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania just can’t catch a break as now it’s learned the flick is bombing at the Chinese box office which follows the film scoring the worst drop for a Marvel movie.

It is bombing so big that Quantumania is actually trailing far behind the first two Ant-Man movies where the Chinese box office made up around 20% of their grosses.

What’s also alarming is that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Qauntumania is the first Marvel movie to be released day and date in China in four years, following the release of Avengers: Endgame which made a massive $630 million in China, so it’s not doubt the Chinese love the MCU.

THR reports that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania only made $7 million in its second weekend in China coming in third as it trails behind two local movies, one of which has made a half billion dollars in a month (so don’t try to blame the “pandemic”).

The site reports that after nine days of release in China, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has earned $31.4 million, with projections offering a $40 million finish at the Chinese box office.

Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania MODOK

Will the Quantumania box office be less than the first two Ant-Man movies?

That’s a stark comparison in China to the original Ant-Man which earned $105.4 million in 2015 and its sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, brought in even more with $121.2 million in 2018.

Just imagine if the third movie does worse at the box office at twice the cost or even similar numbers, as it’s a film meant to introduce the MCU Masses to the next big MCU villain, kick off Phase 5, and lead to two Avengers movies.

Ant-Man in 2015 has a $180 million domestic gross with a $339 million international gross (again thanks to over $105 million from China) and a worldwide gross of $519 million.

2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp has a $216.6 million domestic gross with a $406 million international gross (again thanks to over $121 million from China) and a worldwide gross of $622.6 million.

Currently, Quantumania has a domestic gross of $167 million with a $196.3 million international gross and a worldwide gross of $363 million (and will not be getting $100 million+ from China).

Domestically saw Quantumania suffer a 69.7% drop from its first weekend, a Marvel low.
