DCU Overhauls Clayface Script Ahead of 2026 Release

DCU Overhauls Clayface Script Ahead of 2026 Release

The DCU Clayface movie currently in development is getting a rewrite.

Jeff Sneider first said Clayface was getting a page one rewrite, which means starting over almost entirely from scratch.

Amini Replaces Flanagan on Script

Now The Wrap reports that screenwriter Hossein Amini has been brought onboard to write Clayface.

Mike Flanagan previously wrote the draft who was also interested in directing but Flanagan is busy with the upcoming Carrie TV series.

Watkins to Direct

James Watkins is directing, who helmed Speak No Evil. Hossein Amini is also known for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, 47 Ronin, Snow White and the Huntsman, Drive and more.

What is Clayface about?

Previous details have said Clayface is rumored to be a horror-thriller-tragedy, with the lead protagonist not expected to be portrayed as the notorious villain he’s known as in the Batman canon.

It’s also been claimed Clayface centers on a B-list actor who injects himself with something to stay relevant only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay.

Matt Reeves is on board as a producer along with Lynn Harris. Clayface appeared in Reeves’ executive produced Batman: The Caped Crusader animated series, and James Gunn’s Creature Commandos animated series.

James Gunn confirms Clayface set in DCU

Gunn has also said the Clayface movie is set in the DCU.

“Exciting news out of DC Studios today as Clayface, a DCU story from a script by Mike Flanagan, has been OFFICIALLY greenlit,” tweeted Gunn back in December.

It’s also been reporting the film is a low-budget horror movie, with the budget around $40 million.

Recently also saw the DCU news that the Sgt. Rock movie has been canceled.

Release info

Clayface gets released on Sept. 11, 2026, which follows Supergirl on June 26, 2026, and Gunn’s Superman on July 11, 2025. Filming is expected to begin in October in the UK.
