Well, that didn’t last long as it is learned another Halloween reboot is in the works that involves a new TV series as well as plans for a cinematic universe.
Universal recently rebooted the franchise with the new Halloween trilogy from director David Gordon Green, which was thought to put an end to the franchise.
However, you can’t keep a good man down as Michael Myers will apparently be returning in some form.
Miramax has acquired the rights
Deadline reports Miramax (upcoming includes David Ayer’s The Beekeeper starring Jason Statham) has acquired the television rights to the Halloween franchise from Trancas International Films, run by Malek.
The details include that Miramax has signed a wide-ranging deal to develop a new Halloween TV series which is envisioned to launch a new cinematic universe spanning both film and television, so that means new movies as well.
“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Halloween to television,” Miramax’s Head of Global TV Marc Helwig said. “We are thrilled to expand our long and successful partnership with Trancas and the brilliant Malek Akkad in introducing this iconic franchise to a new form of storytelling and a new generation of fans.”
Akkad added, “Trancas International Films is extremely enthused to be expanding our long-standing relationship with Miramax, and we look forward to working with Marc Helwig and the entire team in creating this new chapter.”
Let’s hope they get it right
Deadline also reports that Blumhouse was in talks to acquire the Halloween franchise. Well, Blumhouse just bombed big time with The Exorcist: Believer reboot, so it sounds like a good thing Blumhouse didn’t get it.
Let’s hope the new Halloween reboot learns lessons from Blumhouse’s mistake and doesn’t shit all over the original and its fans.
Regarding the reboot, I don’t have a problem with it if it’s done right. The franchise is insanely popular (I have girl friends with Michael Myers tattoos!), so there is definitely an audience who loves the stuff. Again, they need to get it right and make it a decent quality.
The three recent movies have made nearly half a billion dollars.
