James Gunn Clarifies Marvel Slam: ‘They Were Screwed, Not Dead’

James Gunn is clearing the air about his recent controversial Marvel comments.

In his Rolling Stone interview, Gunn said Marvel was “killed” by corporate mandates and the push for constant content.

Now on Threads, he’s clarified what he meant, that Marvel isn’t dead, but they were absolutely screwed by decisions he says were out of their control.

“They were screwed by the situation”

Responding to a fan on Threads who complained about his Marvel remarks, Gunn explained, “To be clear – & as IS clear in the context of the interview – I didn’t say ‘it killed them’ like they’re over, but they were screwed by the situation they had no control over.”

He went on to criticize what he says is the streaming-first mentality that dominated the industry the last few years.

“The sacrifice-everything-for-streaming craze killed many good things by forcing a demand for ‘content’ that couldn’t possibly be met, putting movies on TV before they had a proper theatrical run & much more,” Gunn said.

Gunn added that things are improving.

“The insanity has died down & balanced out everywhere. Thank God,” he said.

Is too much content really to blame?

Blaming too much content seems to be the excuse everyone is using in the industry for why basically everything – except for Netflix – has failed on streaming.

However, is too much content really to blame?

As I replied to Gunn’s response on Threads, “Too much content isn’t what killed them. Agenda ahead of story did. There’s the lesson to learn. How’d it work out???”

Too much content isn’t the reason Marvel told its creators not to read the comics while developing Disney+ shows. Too much content is also not the reason why they decided to adapt years worth of crappy comics into the MCU.

Too much content isn’t why Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t allowed to appear in WandaVision, why they used America Chavez in Multiverse of Madness, why Anthony Mackie became the new Captain America, why Hailee Steinfeld became the new Hawkeye, why She-Hulk did what it did, why there was ever a Ms. Marvel series, why Secret Invasion failed, and why Daredevil: Born Again emasculated both Daredevil and Kingpin.

This is just for Marvel, there’s loads of other examples all throughout the other streaming services and Hollywood. Now they’re broke. Surprise.

That also includes Gunn himself, who included his agenda in Creatures Commandos, which made no sense at all, and looks to be included in Superman.

I’m curious if Gunn will come out and talk about the Marvel DEI mandates? Did Gunn changing Cosmo into a female have anything to do with the story? Did any of the above examples have anything to do with story??? Why not make Krypto a female?

I ask again: How’d it work out???
