More James Politics in Superman? Viral Campaign Targets Misinformation

The marketing for James Gunn’s Superman is heating up, and now it’s taking a “meta” approach with a viral campaign centered around the Daily Planet, hinting at more political themes.

A new social media campaign promo features a mock newspaper editorial written by Perry White, Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Planet, played by Wendell Pierce, welcoming readers to the fictional newsroom. The letter promises accurate journalism in a city “awash with misinformation and sensationalism.” Sound familiar?

Daily Planet Message Mirrors Superman’s Political Themes and Media Commentary

“In a world where dogs can fly and men have heat vision,” White writes, “our greatest strength is providing reliable journalism that informs and serves the public.”

It’s clearly a nod to Krypto the Superdog and Superman’s powers, but also a wink(?) at real-world media commentary. The message lines up with Gunn’s take on Superman as a politically charged movie dealing with modern issues like fake news, trust in journalism, and public accountability. Gunn has also dropped The American Way.

Warner Bros. Pushes Immersive Marketing — But Is It What Fans Want?

Whether fans see this as clever world-building or more messaging remains to be seen. But it’s clear Warner Bros. is going all-in on positioning Superman as more than just another cape movie and maybe more than fans were asking for.

The Daily Planet now has its own online presence tied to the movie’s campaign, letting fans follow updates as if they were citizens of Metropolis themselves.

Keep up on all the fake news.

Superman hits theaters July 11.

Making up the Daily Planet team also includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, and Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant.
