James Gunn Responds To ‘Superman’ Spot Criticism

The new Superman spot released during the NFL playoffs has caused a bit of controversy as some fans aren’t happy with the footage of David Corenswet flying as the Man of Steel.

I actually first pointed out how James Gunn has removed the blood from the spot, which is featured in the trailer, which Gunn has yet to comment on; however, Gunn has commented on criticisms surrounding Corenswet.

What are the complaints?

Many fans have taken to social media to offer they don’t like how Corenswet looks in the footage in the new “Icon” spot. I’ve seen tweets referencing the face of Corenswet and even one mentioning it looks weird that he doesn’t blink. I don’t really have a problem with it and feel the spot comes off a lot better than that first trailer.

Well, a fan remarked to Gunn on Threads, “Looks dope!! Great camera angle of Superman flying!! Except there’s something with his face that looks a little off. I know there’s plenty of time to refine the CG.”

Gunn shot back they didn’t use CG for the scene: “There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David.”

The last thing Gunn probably wants is controversy surrounding his Superman’s face. Recall the disaster when Warner Bros. removed the mustache of Henry Cavill in the theatrical release of Justice League.

The spot was also featured on the Today show, which again, doesn’t feature blood. Watch below.
