The Batman 2: Matt Reeves Confirms Returning Cast And New People

Matt Reeves appeared at the Golden Globes on Sunday and was asked about The Batman: Part II which recently saw its release date delayed a whole year.

Reeves didn’t offer much other than again confirming he films this year, but he did offer up a nugget the cast will be returning along with new people. Presently, it’s known Robert Pattinson will be back along with Colin Farrell as Penguin. IMDb also lists Jeffrey Wright returning as Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred. It’s unknown if Zoe Kravitz will be back as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. Regarding new members to the cast, that hasn’t been announced, yet.

“I can tell you that we are going to be shooting this year and that we’re excited about it. I can’t really tell you anything about it [laughs] except that we’re really excited about it.”

Reeves was also asked what he think the fans will like the most:

“That we’re continuing the story… I don’t know, I can’t tell you that write now [smiles]. I’m not going to give that away but I appreciate it.

I’m really excited to be making it, and to get our cast back together and to get new people involved. We’re really excited about it. I think what I am excited about is that I feel like we’re doing something that absolutely continues where the story came from but is something I hope people are going to be really surprised by.”

Lot of unrest in the sequel

Recently Reeves also talked up the story offering things lie in a more gray area in the sequel compared to how the first movie was more black and white.

“There’s a lot of unrest and there’s a lot of clamoring because of the revelations of what we find out at the end of the [first] movie. There’s unrest in the streets to say, ‘Well, how could this be?’ The idea that this corruption extends as deep as it extends. In the first movie, Batman views things very simplistically, he sees things in black and white. What he can represent and how he can affect that.”

“As we enter into the next movie, there’s a lot more gray. There’s a lot more people at odds. There’s a lot more division in the city. It’s a lot more like our world is now, there’s a lot of turmoil because people are in their camps, and they’re not communicating. How does Batman fit into that? Where do you fit? It’s not as clear as going, ‘Oh yeah, bad guy, I go after bad guys’. And when things are in gray, it makes it very hard to be Batman, so this is part of the challenge as we enter it.”

The Batman: Part II gets released Oct. 1, 2027.
