KPop Demon Hunters 2 Set for 2029 Release On Netflix

Netflix and Sony have locked in plans to release KPop Demon Hunters 2 in 2029. The sequel to the animated hit is officially moving forward after the first film became Netflix’s most-watched movie ever and a surprise theatrical performer.

A Long Wait, but an Expected One

Animated movies take years to build, and this one won’t be rushed. Deals with filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are done, and production is underway. Netflix and Sony didn’t say if the sequel will get a broad theatrical rollout, but given the first movie’s box-office success, it’s hard to imagine they won’t explore the option.

The first KPop Demon Hunters shocked Hollywood by hitting No. 1 at the domestic box office during its sing-along event runs, pulling in around $25 million total across August and Halloween weekends — all while streaming on Netflix. That performance, plus massive global fan engagement, guaranteed a sequel.

The Netflix Phenomenon Continues

Since debuting, KPop Demon Hunters has pulled more than 325 million views on Netflix and over 541 million hours watched, becoming the platform’s biggest movie of all time. The soundtrack also soared:

  • Hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200
  • Went platinum
  • Delivered three major singles — “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop” — on the Billboard Hot 100

“Golden” even reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. Toy giants Mattel and Hasbro have signed on as global co-master toy licensees, a major signal that this franchise is now a long-term brand play for Netflix.

Story and Cast

Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) will return as idol-heroes Huntr/x. The first film set up mythology around their demon-hunting lineage. Co-director Maggie Kang has already hinted the sequel will dig deeper into the lore and character histories that didn’t fit into the 85-minute original.

“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory,” Kang said earlier this year. “There’s a lot of questions left unanswered.”

Fans can expect more supernatural battles, more emotional stakes, and — obviously — more music.
