Avatar: Fire and Ash Starts Cool at Box Office, Faces Uphill Climb

King James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash opens on the cooler side at the box office. The flick will need legs just to break even, let alone score a profit.

The good news, at least for Disney, is that it was a similar trend with Avatar 2: The flick opened lower than estimated but still somehow managed to rake in over $2.3 billion. To this day, I still only know of one person who went to see it in theaters.

Avatar: Fire and Ash Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Franchise’s Lowest

Avatar: Fire and Ash Opens Below Avatar 2

Avatar: Fire and Ash opened with a Thursday preview box office of only $12M, which is down from Avatar 2’s $17 million.

Its first Friday, which includes the Thursday numbers, brought in $36.5M, again down from Avatar‘s 2 first Friday of $53.2M.

For the opening weekend, Avatar: Fire and Ash opened domestically with $88M. Avatar 2 brought in over $134.1M. That’s nearly a 35% decline.

Fire and Ash opens with $257M internationally. Avatar 2? $307.6M.

Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s opening weekend total stands at $345M. Avatar 2 opened at $441.6M. That’s over a 20% difference.

Can Fire and Ash Still Reach Break-Even?

The break-even number for Avatar: Fire and Ash is said to be a massive $1 billion.

But even with that 20% difference accounted for, if Fire and Ash performs similar to Way of the Water, that’s still around a $1.84B box office, so it should be okay unless the box office completely collapses.

James Cameron’s Future Beyond Avatar

King James has also gone on record stating Fire and Ash needs to make a profit to make the other films.

Cameron has also said he’s pretty much done with the franchise and wants to do new projects. He’s mentioned another Terminator minus Arnold, and a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel.
