Luigi’s Mansion Movie Rumored As Nintendo Expands After Super Mario Galaxy Success

Luigi’s Mansion Movie Rumored As Nintendo Expands After Super Mario Galaxy Success

A Luigi’s Mansion movie could be next for Nintendo and Illumination, at least according to a new rumor making the rounds online.

On X, Shpeshal_Nick claimed that after the success of the Mario movies, Nintendo is “looking at pitching a Luigi’s Mansion movie.”

Nothing has been officially announced by Nintendo, Universal, or Illumination, so for now this falls firmly in rumor territory.

Luigi’s Mansion movie rumor starts making sense

Even if it’s only a rumor right now, the idea isn’t hard to believe.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is off to a huge start at the box office, and Nintendo already has proof that animated Mario movies can turn into massive global hits.

As of Tuesday, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had reached $429 million worldwide, including $222.4 million domestic. The first Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023 finished with more than $1.36 billion worldwide.

That kind of performance is exactly why Nintendo would be looking at more spinoffs and character-focused movies. Luigi is one of the biggest names in the Mario universe, and Luigi’s Mansion already gives them a built-in hook that is different from the mainline Mario films. Instead of another bright Mushroom Kingdom adventure, Luigi’s Mansion leans into ghosts, creepy comedy, and haunted house fun.

What Luigi’s Mansion is

Luigi’s Mansion started as a Nintendo GameCube game released in 2001. It made Luigi the main character as he explored a haunted mansion, searched for Mario, and captured ghosts using the Poltergust vacuum device. The game also introduced King Boo and Professor E. Gadd, both of whom became key parts of the Luigi’s Mansion series.

The series went on to become its own corner of the Mario franchise. That’s a big reason a movie adaptation feels like a natural next step. It already has its own tone, its own villains, and its own setup that could work as a family-friendly animated supernatural comedy.

Super Mario Galaxy Movie Box Office Estimates Eye Massive $350M Global Opening

Super Mario Galaxy Movie is already breaking records

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie didn’t just open big. It opened with a stack of notable records.

Its global debut of $372.5 million made it the biggest global opening of 2026 at the time, the second biggest global opening ever for an Illumination movie behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the second biggest opening ever for a movie based on a video game behind the 2023 Mario film.

Domestically, the film posted the biggest opening of 2026 and followed that with a strong weekday hold. Box Office Mojo shows it pulled in $14.79 million on Tuesday alone, pushing its domestic total to $222.4 million after seven days.

Internationally, it also came out flying, with reports pegging the overseas opening at $182.4 million, making it one of the biggest international starts yet for both Illumination and a video game movie.
