Peter Jackson Returns with Exclusive Intros

Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson has filmed brand-new introductions for each of the Extended Editions of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

These never-before-seen intros were made exclusively for the Fathom theatrical event and will screen in theaters before each film.

Jackson reflects on the making of each movie, the challenges of bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life, and the lasting impact of experiencing The Lord of the Rings in cinemas. A teaser of Jackson’s introduction to The Fellowship of the Ring is now available on Fathom’s site.

Record-Breaking Ticket Sales

The event is already smashing records. With over 400,000 tickets sold and more than $5 million in domestic box office revenue so far, ticket presales are tracking 65% higher than Fathom’s previous franchise record from 2024.

Due to high demand and sold-out showings, Fathom and participating theaters are adding additional showtimes and locations nationwide.

All three Extended Editions will screen over two weekends in January 2026 with special DBOX showings at select locations:

  • The Fellowship of the Ring: January 16 & 23 (Fridays)
  • The Two Towers: January 17 & 24 (Saturdays)
  • The Return of the King: January 18 & 25 (Sundays)

The Legacy of The Lord of the Rings

Based on Tolkien’s legendary novels, Jackson’s six-film saga (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies) has grossed $6 billion globally and won 17 Academy Awards, making it the most awarded franchise in movie history.

In 2021, The Fellowship of the Ring was added to the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural significance.

Looking ahead, Warner Bros. is set to release a brand-new chapter in the saga: The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, slated to premiere December 17, 2027.
