Elijah Wood says there is a “good chance” he will return as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming Middle-earth film directed by Andy Serkis.
While nothing has been officially announced, Wood’s latest comments add more momentum to the growing list of original cast members expected to appear in the new Lord of the Rings movie.
Wood spoke about the project in a new interview with The Times UK.
Elijah Wood Hints at Frodo Return
When asked directly about appearing in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Wood smiled and acknowledged the rumors.
“It hasn’t been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag,” Wood said, referring to Ian McKellen confirming he will return as Gandalf.
“So there is a good chance. I’m not able to officially say anything until it’s announced, but I will say I’m thrilled with the prospect of another film.”
Wood added that returning to Middle-earth can make fans protective of the franchise, but he sounds excited about the direction of the new Lord of the Rings story.
“Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together. I’m just excited.”
Wood Says No One Else Should Play Frodo
The actor also addressed McKellen’s previous comments that he wouldn’t want anyone else playing Gandalf.
Wood agreed with the sentiment when it comes to Frodo.
“I totally get that. I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I’m alive and able,” he said.
Wood added that he’s also looking forward to seeing the characters return from the perspective of a fan.
“When you are in the cinema and you see the hat turn around and it’s Gandalf… I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is directed by Andy Serkis, who also returns as Gollum. Warner Bros. has set a December 17, 2027 release date for the film.
Production is expected to start this July in New Zealand. Ian McKellen recently confirmed he will return as Gandalf and joked that he will once again put on the wizard’s hat, beard, eyebrows, and gloves.
The story takes place after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the events at the Mines of Moria, focusing on Gollum’s role during that period.
Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens — the creative team behind the original trilogy — are producing the new Lord of the Rings film.
