James Gunn Explains Why Superman Is Hitting Digital So Soon

With Superman passing the half-billion mark worldwide, many fans were surprised to see the film heading to digital only 35 days after its theatrical debut.

According to Gunn – he’s also just as surprised – and says the reason Superman is being released Friday isn’t because of anything to do with potential box office woes, but everything about Peacemaker Season 2.

Gunn Says Peacemaker Is the Reason

Speaking to Screen Rant, Gunn said he was also “heartbroken” to see the shortened theatrical run, but explained there’s a scheduling reason behind it:

“Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month. There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that Peacemaker is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that’s really the reason for it.”

Timing Around Peacemaker Season 2

So according to Gunn, with Peacemaker Season 2 premiering on HBO Max August 21, the early digital release means fans can catch up on Superman before the series drops.

Gunn has previously described the new season as a direct sequel to Superman, which can be argued makes the early home release a way to ensure the largest possible audience is ready for the DCU’s next chapter in Peacemaker Season 2.

However, Superman‘s box office has stalled, presently short of $600 million, which has led many fans to think (check out the reactions) the digital release is because of the box office (which might be the right call) and not because of Peacemaker Season 2, which will likely have a fraction of the audience. We can add that those fans who are watching Peacemaker likely went to see Superman. To boot, Cena only has a brief cameo in the flick.

Superman Box Office

As of Tuesday, Superman stands at $583,184,195 worldwide — $333,784,195 domestic and $249,400,000 international.

It’s well short of The Batman ($772.2M)and even Man of Steel ($670M) from 12 years ago.
