James Gunn gives fans an update on the Superman trailer release and offers he is still working on it, which is guessed to be released in December at Brazil’s big CCXP convention.
DC insiders actually told me the Superman trailer was being worked at around the time of Comic-Con in July. What can happen with trailers is that at times the director actually doesn’t put together the trailer, but it’s put together by someone at the studio or even another related VFX company (case in point, Ridley Scott didn’t put together that first Gladiator II trailer). So someone could be working on Marvel’s Thunderbolts trailer and also be working on the Superman trailer.
The DC insiders also told me the footage they saw from Gunn’s Superman is “solid.” Like a lot of us, they’re hardcore when it comes to these types of things, so I trust what they say.
What did James Gunn say about the Superman trailer release?
Regarding what James Gunn had to say about the Superman trailer release, since it’s getting close to December, and I think the Superman trailer is one of the most highly anticipated pieces of CBM content to get released literally in years, fans asked Gunn about it on Threads.
A fan questioned Gunn, “Can we know the progress of the trailer? Is it already finished?”
Gunn answered back, “It’s not. I worked on it this weekend.”
Hearing James Gunn stating he is working on the Superman trailer is good news and refreshing. It means the trailer will be to his liking (again, look what happened with Ridley Scott’s first Gladiator II trailer which they fixed with the release of the second trailer).
This year’s CCXP takes place December 5th to the 8th. We are guessing that it’s likely Gunn will bring the DCU to the CCXP on Saturday, December 7, which is when the Superman trailer will be released.
Update: James Gunn has told fans he will not be at CCXP. It’s unknown if that means the DCU will also not be there and if the trailer will be released at the convention:
Gunn answers fan questions
Gunn also answered additional DCU fan questions on Threads.
“Why haven’t you introduce key members of the Justice League like The Flash and the Aquaman to the dcu?” questioned a fan.
Gunn replied, “Because the DCU hasn’t even started yet?”
Recently also saw Gunn shoot down a rumor about a video game for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, but Gunn keeps hopes alive as he points out he didn’t shoot down a video game about the DCU’s Batman.
“Ah yes that’s true. The article kind of contradicts itself saying both. But you’re right. I only debunked a The Batman video game not a DCU Batman video game,” said Gunn.
CCXP important to James Gunn
Regarding the upcoming CCXP, ” A fan slyly asked, “Any plans for Brazil? We have some deep, cultural, love for DC, and CCXP is coming soon, so…”
“Brazil is always important to me!” Gunn shot back.
Following the release of Superman on July 11, 2025, fans are also wondering if Gunn will be tackling additional DC properties.
“Can you give us a hint as to what’ll be the next DCU film you’ll write? Is it on the slate?”
“If you know please tell me because I do not!” said Gunn.
In addition to Superman, presently on the DCU slate is Supergirl for a June 26, 2026 release date which Ana Nogueira is writing. The Lanterns TV series is also in the works from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Also on the TV side of things, James Gunn wrote Creature Commandos which gets released December 5, 2024, and Peacemaker Season 2 is in the works.
